Municipality located halfway between Eymoutiers and Peyrat-le-Château.

In the 12th century parish Saint-Amand-le-Petit depended on the Barony of Peyrat and chapter Eymoutiers. The town was a stronghold of the Templar Preceptory of Charrières (Creuse). Since 1874, a small town of Canton Eymoutiers and community common Gates Vassivière.
