TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Etymology:
  • According to the topographical dictionary of Pas-de-Calais, here are the oldest written forms of Sains-en-Gohelle: Boobs: 1190 - Sains: 1226 - Villa de Sanctis: 1274 - Sains-en-Gohelle: 1789.
  • The village is known in the 11th century. In 1190 Pope Eugene 3 confirms to the abbey of Lobbes Sains possession of William de Sanctis. This word is expressed in Latin by Sanctum, Sanctis Villa de Sanctis. How to use this name in old titles allows us to state that the origin of pilgrims who come there was in honor of certain saints whose relics were deposited there. This etymology is preferable to that which brought on behalf of all the villages of Pas-de-Calais (Sains-les-Pernes, Sains-les-Fressin, The Marquion, Sains-en-Gohelle, with the exception of Sains-les-Hautecloque which takes its name Senones Celtic tribe came to settle in this village) of Celtic Sin (Wood Forest). Indeed it is the opinion of Mr. DAUZAT based on those generally accepted. According to Godfrey (dictionary of ancient language French 1385).
  • Gauhière: Gauharia 1154; Goiele 1230; Gauhère 1246; Gauhièra 1257; Gohiele 1273; Goeria 1300; Gohelle 1378. The Gohelle (pointing to a thicket) is therefore an area covered with bushes. It is a perfectly defensible opinion.
  • The Lordship
  • During the 12th century, Gerard de Sains lord who participated in the Crusades of the feudal lord of Carency had as successors of Alléaume Sains 1218; Robert Sains 1250; Jéhan of Sains 1283; Tassart of Sains 1292; Irene Sains 1383; Wallerand Sains of 1385.
  • In 1400 the land passed to De Bailleul illustrious family of Saint-Pol St, to Bernemicourt, to Baudelet and finally, in 1700 at the Bacon family of which he remains a descendant living in Touraine. This family was related to Du Hays, of the Francqueville, the Blondel d'Aubert, the Sergeant of Bayenghem etc. ... The Bacons were arrested as suspects in 1791 on the withdrawal of conventional Duquesnoy Bouvigny which, as we know, was killed in the fall of Robespierre. The Bacons had survived the disappearance of their enemies, the bitterest in their loss (9 Thermidor - year 2).
  • Abbot Behin, who became deputy to the cumulative Hersin cure Sains with the latter City. In 1828, Bacon, Mayor, wife the Countess d'Aubert Blondel amid a veritable garden of noble Pas-de-Calais. In 1848, their son Hugh, Lieutenant of the Royal Guard falls victim to the days of barricades in Paris. After crushing the uprising, his body was brought with great fanfare in the presence of all the notables of the department. It now rests in the cemetery. The last Bacon died at Pau in 1912. His wife was born Zillof of Stenbourg died at Lille in 1923, without issue. Their property was purchased by the company of Bethune.
  • Customs: Healthy, located in the province of Artois, depended Castle Lens. The customs of Artois approved by Charles V in 1540 applied to Sains subject to 6 items of the custom of Lens.
  • The plaids: the 18th century, they stood at White Ditch. Fund Sains.
  • The wars:
  • Healthy does not appear to have suffered from the war of 100 years. The chronic Bresin 1880, lists of villages devastated in 1472-1475 Artois, Sains is not there.
  • In 1475 De Longueval who held a fief to Healthy, calls for an exemption from taxes due to the devastation of property by the troops at war. At that time most of the villages of Artois were burned and destroyed. The people taken prisoners, removed the cattle and their goods. While the county has long been uninhabited.
  • Cahiers of grievances: The notebooks and Sains Bouvigny were never found. Both localities depended bailiwick of secondary Lens. It would have been interesting to hear the views of residents Sains certainly influenced by the neighbor and the conventional Abbe Behin, pastor and member Hersin.
  • Population:
  • Sains were: from the archives 22 fires (homes) is about 100 inhabitants in 1414 and 21 lights (about 95 inhabitants) in 1469 (according to André Bocquet, research on the rural population of Boulogne and Artois during the periods: 1384-1477, Arras, Provincial Commission of Monuments, 1969).
  • 250 inhabitants in 1789, 800 inhabitants in 1860 (opening of mines Noeux-les-Mines), 1000 inhabitants in 1890, 3700 inhabitants in 1905, 3,300 inhabitants in 1914, 3917 inhabitants in 1936, 4097 inhabitants in 1946 and 4518 inhabitants 1954; 5200 inhabitants in 1957 and 5248 inhabitants in 1962 and 5430 inhabitants in 1968 and 6031 inhabitants in 1995. In 1999, the population extends to 6084 inhabitants.
  • Area: Sains has an area of 554 ha and consists of 18 km of 500 channels.
  • The expansion in 1750 Sains were only houses the End of Upstream. In 1800, besides a few small houses Healthy in 1860 all new buildings along the Via Nazionale and the Rue de la Mairie, around the Eiffel Tower. From 1900, construction of 10 city and many business houses (National Street, Prince, Village Fund Sains). In 1925, construction of the new city. In 1958 cited Beaver, HLM, and many private houses.
  • War 1914 - 1918: Healthy, located a few kilometers from Notre Dame de Lorette, had much to suffer the incessant bombing. It deplored civilian casualties and many devastations. Nearly 300 of his children fell in battle. The cemeteries of the town attest to the violence of fighting.
  • The occupation 1939 - 1944: His wounds barely healed, the war was declared in 1939. The town boasts of never having worked and all according to their means, resisted the occupiers. Bombed twice in 1940 (the town hall was destroyed in August 1943) Sains mourns the loss of several soldiers, innocent victims and the slow death of dozens of its top resistance fighters in the camps of Dachau and others.
  • Monuments:
  • The Church of St. Vaast (sixteenth century) word: the Virgin.
  • The pigeon (eighteenth century).

SIGHTSEEING
  • The Church of St. Vaast of the 16th century.
  • Sainte Apolline's Chapel: The chapel, located in the park Bacon register chapel dedicated to the Virgin, dates from the 18th century (1771 exactly). According to the statement, Sainte Apolline was martyred during the period of Christianity all his teeth were pulled. Therefore, we came to pray at the chapel where the young children had trouble "making his first teeth. When the castle was Camaieux street, the gentry, Mr. and Mrs. Bacon were to say Mass in the chapel, except on Sunday when the church service took place at the church.
  • Crossroads of the grid: The grid used to close the city Irus strikes of the early century to prevent demonstrators not just sack the homes of workers who were working. They also closed the gate at the professions of faith: it stood an altar and the parish priest of St. Margaret blessed the area. School children are costumed as angels, Zouaves and florists (they deposited flower petals on the path from the church to the altar). Then came the communicants and communicants followed by "Children of Mary" (Mary's children were young girls who worked at the Sisters of the workroom). This grid has disappeared in the 1950s.
