• Etymology:

• According to the topographical dictionary of Pas-de-Calais, here are the oldest written forms of Sains-en-Gohelle: Boobs: 1190 - Sains: 1226 - Villa de Sanctis: 1274 - Sains-en-Gohelle: 1789.
• The village is known in the 11th century. In 1190 Pope Eugene 3 confirms to the abbey of Lobbes Sains possession of William de Sanctis. This word is expressed in Latin by Sanctum, Sanctis Villa de Sanctis.
