TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Location and site:
  • Located in the northwestern department of Aube (Champagne-Ardenne), minutes of the Marne, in the alluvial valley of the Seine, just 120 km from Paris, the city is Romilly-sur-Seine the second city of his department in terms of population.
  • The situation of the crossroads town of Romilly and his site (floodplain) explain in part the history of the city ...
  • History:
  • The Valley of the Seine, a traditional pathway, had a very ancient occupation whose remains are attested throughout the region. In this way, the site of Romilly himself probably benefited from early occupation, even if it was not excavated enough to confirm it. However, it is almost certain that the prominence of high bushes overlooking the city to the west was occupied in Gallo-Roman villa in which the owner was a man named Romilius somehow the hero eponym of the city.
  • Also because of its location as a crossroads, the town of Romilly has seen many invasions: rise of the Normans on the Seine, rides the Hundred Years' War, passing gangs of religious wars in modern times, invasion of the Austrians in 1814 in pursuit of Napoleon, Prussian invasion in 1870.
  • Until the French Revolution, Romilly is a large village of about 1200 people whose economy is predominantly agricultural. Land and power are then shared between a secular lordship and an abbey. Lord of the castle are preserved today as two flats, while the beautiful 18th century abbey house and its outbuildings are the only index of regular religious power that ruled Romilly.
  • As a rural past, so, no traces spectacular castles were dismantled in the 19th century, the village church which threatened to fall into disrepair and was demolished in 1905, about the cemetery that surrounded him, he was transferred on the outskirts of the city. Rest Abbey Sellières and for anyone who would wander around the old Romilly, as former watermill, such old laundry, and many old buildings to keep the nostalgia of a bygone era, albeit discreet, but always underlying .
  • Actually, it is especially its industrial past is the originality of the town of Romilly. With increasing population own at the end of 18th century Europe, agriculture is no longer sufficient to meet the needs of Romillon who then turn to the multi-activity while continuing to work the land, part of the population was thus able to earn additional income by working at home on spinning on behalf of a boss. This is the era of proto-industry. With the 19th century and the industrial revolution, the town is growing so steadily thanks to an economy now firmly focused on the hosiery, like the entire periphery Trojan. At the beginning of the century the first factories were built and new houses, those of employers and industrial workers hosier, were erected around the existing village. The city emerges from its historical boundaries. In the late nineteenth century, there are nearly 2600 spinning for 4000 inhabitants, and just before the First World War, is the second center Romilly hosier department with 61 schools and 1114 workers. The advent of the railroad completed to urbanize and to shape the town. The arrival of the first line is coming very early because of Montereau, she reached the city in 1848. Romilly quickly becomes a railway junction in connection with Paris and Troyes and in the heart of a network of regional interest, now disused, but which continues to shape the landscape.
  • After the Second World War, Romilly benefits greatly from the economic expansion of post-war boom, it's a little golden age of the city Romillon. In 1930, the population is roughly the same as today, namely: 14 000 inhabitants, but 4630 workers, over a third of the population working in industry and hosier elastic tissue, which many in small workshops or at home. Hosiery far in the close dependence of Troyes acquires its autonomy with the installation of large companies and production units specifically Romillon: Romilly became one of the leading French centers of production of fabrics and elastic stockings and the heels are shine in the names of famous Chantelle, Le Coq Sportif, Olympia, Barbara, among others ... Today, many small factories with their roof so special, being located in or behind houses, are all remnants of the industrial past Romillon you can experience during a guided tour that offers Tourist Office of the City.
  • Two iconic characters Romilly:
  • Voltaire: If you come to Romilly, you will be surprised to discover a plaque in memory of Voltaire, opposite the Place des Martyrs, on the left wall of the Municipal Conservatory ... Little historical explanation. On the death of Voltaire, his nephew, who was commandataire Abbey Sellières located on the town of Romilly, managed to bury the philosopher in the cellar of the abbey until the church property are secularized after the Revolution. The body of Voltaire had to then be relocated as well as his body spent some time in the ancient church of Romilly. Unfortunately, she did not stay, and Voltaire was finally buried in the church of Sainte-Genevieve de Paris (Pantheon present), between Descartes and Mirabeau. However, the discovery in 1927 of a skeleton at the Abbey was able to believe that the remains of Voltaire had been retained by Sellières. This story has also contributed to fuel the legend Romillon. Anyway, we will keep this brief history of the body of a famous philosopher in Romilly, and reminds the plate.
  • Henri Millet (1865-1902): Less well known than Voltaire, Henri Millet remains one of the essential characters of the story Romillon. First, because as a hatter, it crystallizes around him the identity of a primarily industrial city and is the archetype of Romillon the second half of the 19th century. On the other hand, because he was a gifted and brilliant man who sacrificed his life, including physical, to defend a political ideal, that of socialism. Son of an era (the beginnings of socialism and collectivist grand theories), Henri Millet marked the town of Romilly, first as an activist, then as mayor from 1895 to 1896 and from 1900 to 1902. It was the very expression of forging the fighting spirit of his city. Unfortunately, the disease carried too quickly this important figure in the French Workers' Party. At his death, the City Council decided to honor the memory of the deceased by giving its name to the Lower Park Street that he was born, and by erecting a monument designed by the famous sculptor Alfred Boucher. The monument was inaugurated April 17, 1904, to mark the second anniversary of his death. You can still admire the cemetery Senior Bushes.
  • Twinning:
  • Currently, Romilly is twinned with five foreign cities: two in Germany, one in Ukraine, Italy and Great Britain. The first three matches were held that year in 1960, that is to say in the Cold War. Thus, the first (May 4, 1960), with Gotha (former East Germany) had it intended to create a link behind the Iron Curtain. On 14 June the Italian town of Medicina is bound to Romilly, followed by the UK Milford Haven, Nov. 14. On 1 December 1967, Uman in Ukraine, is twinned with Romilly. Finally, more recently, another city in Germany, Lüdensheid, came to swell the rand twin cities in the City (May 27, 1991).
  • At the entrances of the city, signs indicate the distance between these cities and Romilly, while the United Cities Square, Avenue du General de Gaulle, celebrates the Twin Cities.

  • The Memorial (rue Jean Jaures): Witness the wave of memorial that is rampant in France after the Great War, the War Memorial Romilly, opened in 1927, surprised not only by its height (15 meters) but its symbolic power. On the other hand, the author has not hesitated to use symbols to denounce the horror of war and the allegorical statue of the summit (2.85 meters) is it an image of freedom of the victorious tyranny, while the sculpture is the central sacrifice of the soldier and his family for the Fatherland. Symbols Romillon activity (agriculture and industry) are also represented, just above the long list of victims of two world wars and the war Algeria.
