Prefecture of the Aveyron, the city is built on a hill overlooking the Aveyron valley at the junction of two geographical regions, North Causse Comtal, South Ségala.

• The red sandstone cathedral is one of the finest monuments in the Gothic style in southern France. First stone laid in 1277, its construction will last until the 16th century.
