The common Riotord is located in Haute-Loire to the limits of the Ardèche and the Loire. It is located on the western flank of the Cevennes (Tracol neck) and Park boundary Pilat.

The town was divided under the old regime between Forez (about 3 / 4) and the Velay but depended on the diocese of Le Puy.
