The origin of Ranville goes back to antiquity. The Roman road linking Pont-Audemer and Bayeux spent on the town, travelers must take a ferry to Ranville to reach the port of Bénouville and continue their journey. It was not until the mid 19th century that the tank was replaced by a swing bridge.
Developed a farm on the town and gave it its name: Rando, personal name of Germanic origin, associated with villa referring to a rural area. Over the centuries, several activities were developed: extraction of Caen stone, which was then sent, particularly to England, by Orne (Street career to remember that past Longueval) river activities (fishing and sablonniers ) to Longueval who just died with the opening of the canal from Caen to the sea, agriculture, including the marshes drained in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The town was split between several hamlets more or less together: Le Bourg Neuf, The Bottom Ranville, The Horn, The Mill, The Mariquet, Longueville, Longueval.
In 1860, Ranville decided to demolish their church, considered outdated and too small. They retained only the bell tower of the 11th and 12th centuries still exists alongside the new church.
Ranville was the first town liberated in France June 6, 1944 by the British 13th Parachute Battalion (13th Parachute Battalion), commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Luard. Helm of the castle, a mansion on a floor, then served as headquarters for the 6th Airborne Division.
