Pourrain, its ancient name "pulverenus", has a large number of hamlets (45). The village is situated on a long hill that overlooks three valleys: the valley Baulch, the Ru de Varenne and the Valley Tholon. From its peak in Chailloux (293 m), it enjoys an exceptional view. Its area is 2384 ha.
Possession of Saint Germain in the 5th century, then the bishops of Auxerre, it was erected as a parish from the 6th century. From 820, he raised the Chapter "Cathedral", until the Revolution. In 1304 the population received, canons, a charter of enfranchisement. End Xe, early 12th century a stone church was built on the promontory of the town. It retained its Romanesque nave until the mid 19th century, a beautiful Renaissance choir dominates, its high windows, the street below. It is also the Renaissance that was built and decorated the chapel of St. Baudel. Napoleon returned from Elba Pourrain and passed through the portion of road he borrowed bears his name: imperial road (RD 965). But in 1835, its production was competed by ochres Sauilly (Diges) better. The site closed at the beginning of the Second World War and Pourrain lost half its population. Now Pourrain is an active town, favored by the proximity of Auxerre, it has many associations. His total legal population from 1 January 2009 is of 1416 inhabitants (the municipal population of 1369 inhabitants) located in the town and 45 villages or localities inhabited.
