The Porte Saint-Pierre is one of the only evidence of primitive fortifications that surrounded the town with ramparts and ditches. Walls of the old ramparts still exist on either side of the door. As shown in the illustration from the Father's plan Hello (1664), the ancient gate of the Boulevard was a defensive structure. Rebuilt after a fire in 1736, it is then intended to beautify the main entrance of the city.

The proposed military engineer Jean-Claude Le Michaud d'Arcon Eleanor was confined to the lower part of the current St. Peter's door. At the request of Pontissaliens, he added a tower supporting a clock and a bell and the two fountains that line the side passages. The new door and looked more like a triumphal arch Classic. The work is completed in 1773. In 1895, it was decided to rebuild the top that threatens to fall apart and replace the wooden kiosk and zinc by a stone building from the plans of the architect Pontarlier Authier. The work is completed in 1898. But the new tower with striking clock dials and luminous, is not unanimous: The Mountain Mail of 20 November 1898 refers to as "Chinese hat" and in 1958, the painter Robert Fernier criticizes the "filthy baking stone of the 1900s ".

The gate was called Porte Saint-Pierre in the 20th century. Included in the Inventory of Historical Monuments in 1970, it has now become emblematic of Pontarlier. For the record, note that the currency of the Republic is truncated: the word fraternity is missing.
