Obligatory point of passage towards the coast or to Paris, Pont l'Eveque has always been an important crossing and trading (the barges down the Touques).

In the Middle Ages, the town became an important administrative headquarters of the Vicomte d'Auge. Occupied on English during the 15th century and affected by the wars of religion, Pont l'Eveque known then an era of peace and prosperity.

On August 24, 1944, after 3 days of fighting, the city destroyed to 65% is liberated by the Allies.
