TOWN PRESENTATION

TOWN:

  • Located at the foot of the hill Cabris, the town extends to the south and the municipality of Siagne Auribeau, about 4 km. Consists of hills and valleys, it is crossed by the main road from Grasse, the former Royal Route, which defines various geographical areas:
  • North of the main road, the old village, hamlets and Jaïsous Jacourets, the slope of Cabris, planted with olive trees. The channel of Siagne, which runs through these neighborhoods, offers a walk in the peaceful and picturesque charm.
  • Along the highway, now the modern village main street, there are shops, schools, swimming pool and sports stadiums.
  • South of this axis, neighborhoods Candéou, plains, the Peyloubier ... land used for grazing sheep, covered with scrub and pines of Aleppo, are now the urban area the most recent.
  • Further south still, the Peygros (large hill) and cork oaks, through which a regulated forest track that leads the visitor up Auribeau.
  • The climate is Mediterranean and the Mistral in the final race, often it purifies the air.

HISTORY:

  • Peymeinade becomes a separate municipality until 1868. Until that time its history is intertwined with that of Cabris.
  • Antiquity: the commune, the human presence is attested to by many Roman vestiges, especially a Roman oil mill on the site of Candéou, abandoned in the 3rd century AD.
  • The Middle Ages: the early 13th was built the fortified village, or "castrum", Cabris. From that moment, the territory of present common Peymeinade is "downstream" of the lordship of Cabris. Of lime-burners are installed in this "downstream" in the ancient Roman oil mill. They make the lime in the big oven, lime used in tanning leather in Grasse, which are then stained by the green myrtle leaves collected in Peygros. In the 14th century, the country was devastated by plague epidemics and the bands of "road" (old men of war left to themselves) and depopulated for decades.
  • The beginning of modern times: In 1496, a contract called "Housing Act", the lord Cabris, Balthazar de Grasse, brought 52 families in the area of Menton to repopulate the village of Cabris. These families may cultivate the land they want but must pay a fee to the Lord of Cabris. The downstream is uninhabited but serves as a growing area and routes for livestock. Planting of vines, olive trees, wheat, hemp ...
  • The origin and evolution of Peymeinade:
  • It was not until the early 18th century that some people Cabris begin to reside permanently in the downstream, in houses built on a small hill at the foot of the great hill Cabris.
  • In 1701 the place name "Hamlet Peymeinade" appears in the property registry. It is this little hill that gave its name to Peymeinade. Pey meaning "hill or eminence," Meinade meaning "little child".
  • In the 18th century the population increased considerably and in 1724 became the hamlet of Peymeinade parish. We built a chapel, quickly replaced by a new building: the church of Saint Roch. A little later around 1760, they built the chapel of Saint Marc, along the royal road. Hamlets appear to Jacourets Jaïsous and where we built a new chapel in the mid 19th century. At the same time, the cross roads are sometimes marked by shrines (Pradons, Jacourets, Jaïsous ...).
  • In 1868 the population of Peymeinade is higher than Cabris Peymeinade and gets her separation from Cabris and its status as an independent municipality. In 1869 another major event occurs: the canal of the Siagne. Created to supply water to the city of Cannes, it provides water to all villages through which it passes. The municipality has the option to build fountains and wash, but for lack of money, it will do so only gradually.
  • At this time we also built the railway line Nice-Draguignan. Station Peymeinade, third class, was inaugurated August 25, 1890. The location of the station master's office is the location of the current Office of Tourism. The current hall was the hall of goods. The train will run until August 1944, when German commandos blew up the viaduct which spanned the Siagne. Until the mid-20th century Peymeinade remains mainly a rural farmers "are the flower" they harvest Jasmine, Rose, Violet, Tuberose for the perfume factories of Grasse.
  • From the mid-20th century, the cropland are disappearing in favor of residential construction.
  • The population thus rose from 1970 to 2008 of 2000 people to 7681 people, nearly tripling the figure for the summer. Peymeinade village became a city with all its functions where visitors will enjoy all the amenities while enjoying the charm of its country walks on the banks of the canal or in the Siagne Peygros forest. Finally, in the quiet streets of the old village, visitors can also discover the wells and tanks used to store that allowed water and keep it fresh, and homes recently painted in trompe l'oeil by an artist Modern Guy Ceppi.
