Neuilly-en-Donjon is situated in a plain, still largely covered timber in the 14th century, and that until 1840. The town is crossed by the river Vouzance, flowing into the Loire in the town of Molinet and the stream of Crésançon.
The common Neuilly-en-Donjon is located in the department of Allier, 8 km from the Dungeon (the capital of the Canton) where there are shops and personal services, 50 km from Vichy, 60 km from Moulins, 55 km from Roanne.
Covering an area of 2502 hectares, it has 236 inhabitants at the 2006 provisional census, 228 in 1999.
Located on the borders of three departments (Allier and Saone-et-Loire and Loire), the town is nestled in a rural area, relatively locked despite the fact that the N7 and RCEA pass nearby.
The dominant economic activity is agriculture but for several years from the shops and services were created.
The name of Neuilly emerged as the fourteenth Ñuble, probably a corruption of novi acum, new earth, witness of medieval deforestation.
The Gallo-Roman presence is attested in the town by the discovery of several bronze statuette of Ceres, Mars and Hercules, bronze bases and manufacturing waste that may indicate the existence of a foundry workshop.
Neuilly-en-Donjon depends on the origin of the diocese of Autun and the Priory Marcigny, Burgundian influence is noticeable even on the tympanum of the Romanesque church.
The provost of Neuilly depends Dungeon 1376. Neuilly is mentioned in the 17th century as land rye and 60 wood fires (over 300). The size ranges between 1683 and 1687 from 1730 to 1400 pounds.
SIGHTSEEING
The church of St Mary Magdalen church Romanesque XI-XII, lintel and tympanum of the west portal dated to 1140.
Description: It was part of the Priory Marcigny and its architectural style connects to Brionnais. Its vaulted choir with an apse in a semicircle, is oriented to the east nave wider continues with the discovery with a framework to Father Rodriguez (priest of the town from 1945 to 2003) who had done much renovation the Church. A bell-shaped gable roof and gable overhangs discovered its roof. The front door includes a lintel capitals and finely worked.
Portal: The tympanum of the church overcomes the portal of the scene of the Epiphany with the Virgin Mary on her throne, holding the Infant Jesus on her lap. The three Magi bringing their offerings. The scene is based on two animals, a bull (symbol St-Luc) and a lion returning to Mark (Evangelist). In the background, a winged figure representing the evangelist Matthew (apostle). Luke (evangelist) is not represented. The lintel, which takes place in the eardrum, apparently connected the capitals represent Adam and Eve's Original Sin in meeting the demands of the Devil, symbolized by the serpent. The rest of the lintel is occupied by the Last Supper dinner at Simon's (not the Last Supper, the Last Supper of Jesus). We can distinguish Mary Magdalene, the sinner, watering with tears the feet of Jesus (left table). The capital, left on entering, is on its western face the demon whose laughter expresses the joy of triumph over Man. The south side seems to symbolize the whipping punishment of the sinner by God on his throne. The tent, right on entering, the episode exposes the lives of Daniel, the prophet condemned to be devoured in the den of lions.
Grand house (called the Castle) 19th century:
Its construction is due to Republican George Gallay. The farm-dependent property abuts the town house, separated from it by a wall with a portal of communication.
Now owned by the town, this house has been converted into homes: current three. In this area there is a park which is located the tomb of former owner George Gallay and his girlfriend inside a timber. Near the "Castle", the laundry mark some attention from the owners to the staff of this thankless task. It was renovated in 2001 by the town along the pond. At the entrance to the farm, loft, brick and stone, is in the top and at ground level was built on an open courtyard.
