Chief town of the district, 20 km from La Roche-Sur-Yon, 19 km from La Tranche-sur-Mer and 30 km from Sables d'Olonne.
Moutiers just "monastery," old French word denoting a monastery. Indeed, around the year 1000, there were two monasteries: Saint Michael and Saint-Jacques. Remember that we are on the roads of St. Jacques de Compostela.
After the Norman invasions in the 4th and 8th centuries, the town depended Talmont lords of the 12th century, and by that act became a British possession by the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry Plantagenet, King of England.
Much later, during the wars of Vendee, Charette and his royalist troops unleashed several attacks against the town, the Moutierrois have proved fiercely Republican.
SIGHTSEEING
Les Halles: built in 1765, they are the big attraction of this city. Large rectangle of 55 m by 25 m, cut into a corner, they are supported at their edges by 41 large stone columns and Doric style, in the building by 61 wooden poles aligned in 4 rows around the wide aisle. The frame, its rafters, its hallmarks, is a masterpiece of harmony and skill. The large tiled roof half-round organized into 4 parts is impressive.
The church, late Romanesque, granite, it was built about 1170.
The Fountain St. Brix: also found in Moutiers, an old well known Celtic Bornu wells and a natural spring flowing continuously.
The castle of Cantaudière: 2 km from the town on the road Avrillé. Building Renaissance of the 16th built by André Le Geay who was marshal of Poitou by Louis XIII. The three corner towers, a moat which is reflected in still image of the castle, the elegant proportions of the house and give all that manor particularly attractive.
