Montcornet, Picardy village on the border regions of Champagne-Ardenne, Nord and Belgium.
This location was very important in the past, since at the crossroads of invasions and other civilizations. The invasion of the most memorable and most recent happened on 16 and 17 May 1940, when Guderian Panzer Division arrived in Montcornet. Colonel De Gaulle, commander of the 4th DCR, decides to send his troops to Montcornet to prevent the Germans from crossing the Serre and Hurtaut. The event was called "Battle of Montcornet" - a brochure was published to tell this weapon (can be purchased at the library).
The church of Saint Martin: A 13th century church established in the form of a Greek cross, probably by the Knights Templar. Decorations of the Renaissance (porch and door) were added to the church in 1546 and 1547 before the building was severely damaged after the fire in the town of Montcornet (April 22, 1574). The bell tower collapsed and destroyed the porch. The structure was then reconstructed over the centuries: it was reinforced with buttresses and two towers on its façade (1609 and 1610), surrounded by other towers and turrets turrets and loopholes and protected by a bulkhead ventilation. Because of this work, the church of St. Martin Montcornet church was classified as enriched Thiérache. During the revolution, various decorations and statues have been damaged or removed, and the church was converted into a temple of reason and then Saltpeter. Other restoration work carried out in phases during the 19th century gave the building its current appearance. However, the church of St. Martin was damaged during the First World War when it was used as a hospital for the many wounded soldiers of all nationalities from all over the front of the Aisne and the Marne. The magnificent pipe organs acquired after the revolution have been melted and the decoration and furniture were looted. Finally May 13, 1940, the church of Saint Martin Montcornet was damaged when the pieces of metal flew through its vaults and stained glass during a bombing that caused the explosion of a munitions train at the station Montcornet. A restoration campaign was started in 1948 to replace the wooden ceiling in the elegant Gothic vaults. Since then, the building - now classified as a historical monument - has undergone various repairs (roof, walls, etc. were.).
