TOWN PRESENTATION

The Gallo-Roman Montcaret is located at the crossroads of Roman roads linking Divona (Cahors) to Burdigalia (Bordeaux) and Lugdunum (Lyon) to Burdigalia (Bordeaux). This villa was destroyed and rebuilt several times. Montcaret sudden invasions of the Franks (c. 500), then the Saracens, Vikings which ascend rivers to their Viking ships. The first tower was built on Mount Ravel around 848 to prevent the villagers in case of invasion. From 866, the first castles were built and the castle of Montravel replaces the watchtower. Montcaret village was razed several times and the inhabitants fled to Montravel. Montcaret not be rebuilt until around 1080 by Benedictine monks. Montcaret is the peace village, the village is Montravel war. In 1154, Eleanor of Aquitaine, after being divorced by Louis VII, marries Henry Plantagenet 2nd future king of England. Montravel Montcaret and are English. In 1224, through the alliances, Montcaret becomes French. During the period of Anglo-French wars, when the creation of houses, Montcaret changed nationality several times. In the mid 14th century, Montravel is one of the strongest fortresses of Aquitaine. In 1451, the tide is turning back the 7th and Charles Montravel and Bordeaux. The Bordelais disgruntled remind the English and the episode is called the Battle of Castillon.
