Geographically, Montagny-sur-Grosne, protected to the north by the spur Avoult dominates the upper basin of the Grosne between Cluny and Upper Beaujolais, between Grosne and Noue.
Administratively, it belongs to the Community of Communes Matour and its region, itself enclosed in the country which includes the South Burgundy Saône valley, from Macon to Tournus and Cluny (Cluny townships, and Matour Tramayes).
Historically, it has been the direct influence of the abbey of Cluny, Sires de la Bussiere, marquis of Foudras ... long without ever being subservient to one or the other.
