On the borders of Provence between Luberon and Ventoux, Monieux and gorges Nesque ...

At 650 m altitude, Monieux hangs on the southeastern side of the Mont Ventoux and look eastward.

Below, Nesque, modest and peaceful river meanders lazily place, before going to rush into the wild gorges cut into the limestone plateau of Vaucluse.

The town, spread over 4712 hectares, is composed of several hamlets and localities. Many tourist routes offer spectacular panoramic views and numerous hiking trails crisscross the landscape of great variety: scented scrubland, forests of oak from which emerges the intense whiteness of the limestone ridges, valleys deep mosaic of cultures .. .

Agriculture and Livestock, local development foundations have helped shape the landscape and give it its originality.

Monieux is inseparable from the history of the gorge Nesque, including human occupation dating back to Prénéandertalien (approx. 200 000 years BC - Archaeological excavations of the recent Bau Aubesier).

Later this site called Mons Jovis in Gallo-Roman village sprang up called Monilia in the early Middle Ages, depending on the Falls County. He became myset the 18th century. Then Monieux the 19th century.

Nesque: Considered one of the natural wonders of Provence, they can be admired from the road D942, below Monieux - Lookout Castellaras - facing the imposing rock of Wax sung by the poet Frederic Mistral. .. Downstream of the wax, after infiltration into the bed cracked limestone, the waters of the Nesque are contributing to the resurgence of Fontaine de Vaucluse, about 30 km.
