7 km from the Swiss border and 2 km from the RN 57 Pontarlier-Lausanne, Métabief village is situated at the foot of Morond, renowned for its exceptional scenery. In a small area (574 ha), the territory of the town sprawls from 930 m altitude Creek Reach the red until 1420 m summit Morond.

Métabief, from Old French "mete" or "meth" meaning terminal and reach (stream) takes its name from its strategic position Creek Reach The Red served in the 13th century boundary between baroichage Pontarlier and lordship of jougne which he depended. After farming activities needed to feed its people, Métabief operating iron mines from the 15th century and several forms of craft were developed for making agricultural tools necessary to work the land and forest use. The decline of the iron industry in Métabief as Franche-Comte, began in the mid 19th century due to the importation of iron from Belgium and Scotland and the need for replacement of charcoal by coal. The population is then devoted mainly to agriculture (cereals and milk) and then mainly for milk production, before embarking on a new economic turnaround in 1953 that 25 years later, made the town a station national sports winter.

Today, the resort offers 40 km of winter ski slopes and snow park.
