The Church of St. Orien:
The Church of St. Orien this remarkable wall paintings, including the famous "Danse Macabre". It has been an extensive restoration in recent years.
This church probably dates to the oldest part of the 13th century. It is dedicated to St. Orien and St. Blaise, whose virtue was to cure the infirmities of men and cattle. It was extended for a second nave in 1540 to accommodate the pilgrims, many at the time. She is best known for his Danse Macabre, as it has no real unique design.
The Danse Macabre was probably painted in the last decade of the 15th century. Discovered under the whitewash in 1864, it was restored in 1865-1867 and in 1942. She is twenty characters, arranged in a hierarchy: they are preceded by a narrator who introduces the dance: the "mirror beneficial." These twenty characters, accompanied by the gaunt figure of death, are placed on top of a text legible in places. The remarkable nature of Meslay-le-Grenet is due to the presence of the paintings that complement the Dance:
The "Put the three dead and three Loud" three carefree young noblemen meet three dead;
"King Death": the king dead, is lying on the ground dressed in his shroud; his crown rolled beside him;
The "Put women chatting at Mass," out of which there are very rare in Lübeck (Germany) a similar representation dated last quarter of the 15th century;
Finally, the "Scenes of Passion" located in the choir.
La Danse Macabre Meslay-le-Grenet is probably all paints the most complete in Europe.
The Association of Friends of the Church of Meslay-le-Grenet (AAEMG) actively manages these assets rare.
