TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Location - History:
  • Meaux, sub-prefecture of the Seine-et-Marne is the largest hub of northern department, capital of the Brie. Prestigious city for its cultural heritage, it is ideally placed in a natural and rustic, surrounded by farmland, near the forest Montceaux and picturesque valleys of large and small Morin.
  • City more than two millennia, Meaux was the Gallo-Roman an important urban center. Many archaeological remains today provide evidence that time still largely incomplete. The town was erected into a bishopric from the 5th century.
  • Its urban development since the early Middle Ages until the end of the old regime is intimately linked to all episcopal jewel of Gothic architecture in the center of the city. The old town consists of a tangle of winding streets and narrow, forming a fragmented ancient and picturesque. Around this ancient center of important elements of the Gallo-Roman and medieval are always visible.
  • Bossuet, great person has left his name and traces in the local memory or in the assets of Meaux. He called the eagle Meaux took possession of the bishopric of Meaux in 1682. Residing regularly Meaux he himself celebrated the great liturgical feasts and drove many pastoral visits. The author of the most eloquent sermons of the 17th century, member of the French Academy since 1671, died April 12, 1704, and was buried in the cathedral choir.
  • The American monument is erected out of Meaux on the road to Soissons, where the advancing German army was stopped. In tribute to the hard fighting the battles of the Marne in September 1914, the American monument donated by the United States to France dominates its 32 meters of the battlefield and the town.
  • Gastronomy:
  • Brie de Meaux, which has the world famous city, stands as one of the gastronomic specialties. Presenting a slightly cream, a thin rind and white striped pigment of red spots, a soft dough is smooth and creamy, the "prince of cheeses and desserts first" offers a pleasant, honest and fairly mild.
  • The Meaux Pommery mustard is the second culinary specialty of the town of Meaux.
  • Meaux over water: Meaux developed in the windings of the Marne and the canal Ourcq. A beautiful boat fitted stop drinking water and electricity is built on the banks of the Marne. Located downtown, it retains the boater for many local services and views of the cathedral.

SIGHTSEEING

The main architectural elements that make up the Episcopal city are:

  • St. Stephen's Cathedral offers a harmonious vision of gothic style of the twelfth, thirteenth, 14th and 15th centuries with a performance at the remarkable elegance. Indeed, the Cathedral Meaux started around 1180 in 1530-1540 does not end with the beginning to the end of work, several phases of Gothic architecture which left each time traces tangible building . The great diversity of forms and styles did not affect the aesthetic qualities of the cathedral and is the original material in comparison with other buildings rather remarkable for their stylistic unity.
  • Bossuet The museum, formerly the Bishops Palace at the foot of the cathedral. The palace was built from the 12th to the 17th century and consists of a distinctive architecture of the lower rooms, a hall of the synod and apartments paneled 18th century. The first floor exhibits paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries in which Le Nain, Rigaud, Bon de Boulogne, De Troy, Senelle meet. Then the 19th with Millet, Gerome? and also sculptures Bouchardon. These works are from the former collection of bishops Meaux, plus donations and bequests. Visiting the museum Bossuet invites you to trace the architectural history of this event and former residence of the bishops of Meaux while walking through different rooms of the palace where the memory of Bossuet is always present.
  • Old Chapter, located east of the court of the diocese was sometimes called "castle chapter" because of its four turrets corbelled inspired by the military architecture of the Middle Ages. This vast building has two large rooms with vaulted arches in the basement and ground floor, a noble room on the first floor and finally an attic under the roof. Not accessible to visitors.
  • Bossuet The garden created in the 17th century during the episcopate of Dominica Seguier in line with French gardens, has a geometrical shape resembling a bishop's miter. Local tradition assigns the young André Le Nôtre authorship of this garden.
  • The Garden Walls is an extension of the garden Bossuet on the walls offering Meaux a remarkable site. It houses a small chapel called "flag Bossuet" and the beautiful avenue of yews which extends over a sixty meters. Site accessible only through guided tours.
  • The Natural Park Pâtis located within walking distance of downtown offers an incredible gallery of landscapes and spaces equally amazing that each other by their diversity and beauty: lakes, banks of the Marne, flower meadows, tall reeds, woodland providing shade and their freshness.
