Mazamet, charming city blooming with 12 000 inhabitants, opens the doors of the Black Mountain; last foothills of the Massif Central.
Earth encounters between noon Atlantic and Mediterranean, located at the door of the Regional Natural Park of Haut Languedoc and the foothills of the Montagne Noire, the city Mazamet is steeped in history.
History of conquest: the village Hautpoul, historic birthplace of Mazamet was founded in 413 by the Visigoths. Built on a peak, the village was a formidable fortress controlling the valleys of the Arnette and Thore.
History of religions: the 13th century, Izarn Hautpoul, lord of the place is seduced by the Cathars, the resulting seat Hautpoul by Simon de Montfort in April 1212 and the displacement of inhabitants in the valley to establish Mazamet.
It was not until 1503 before Mazamet becomes a real small town. Residents will again be seduced by the spirit of opposition and tolerance of the Protestant Reformation, the region will not escape when the bloody wars of religion.
Industrial history - "Golden Age": the 19th century, Mazamet becomes, through the leadership of its industry, the world center for processing sheepskins into creating an innovative activity: the Fellmongery. The urban trails "Mazamet, over the wool" (2 courses: 14 stations, document available at the Tourist Office) trace the development of the industrial city and show the elegant and impressive palaces, witnesses of this period preferred.
Today Mazamet turns to a more diversified industry by establishing enterprise-class while focusing on the development of tourism and the recovery of its natural and architectural heritage.

- Medieval village of Hautpoul: fortress atop a rocky outcrop, this village was built according to legend, a Visigoth king in 413. Theatre of the bloody wars of religion (crusade against Cathar struggle between Catholics and Protestants), it is now home to artisans and their studios.
