TOWN PRESENTATION

At the heart of Comminges, in the plain of the Garonne, Martres-Tolosane wraps around the walls of tradition and cultivates a secret protected since the 18th century, know-how that has survived the ages, from water, fire and earth: the china.

In this small city of Comminges, a former country house and the pottery capital of art in Haute-Garonne, belonging to the genus called "circular villages" or "circulades" strikes an odd mix of half-timbered houses with walls of stones, brick or stone. The ring road replaces the old ramparts. Inside the city, the streets follow a path concentric or sinuous, and small houses restricted evidence of a history of well-defended city.

The 18th century was the heyday of the china martraise. The merchants in the area were numerous pottery was most famous. But the revolution and competition, especially English, came to a stop to this prosperity, and never stop. In 1790, there are only two factories in Martres. This is one of the main features of the history of china martraise.

SIGHTSEEING

The sights are numerous: in addition to pottery, local pride in well-kept secret, will address the many Gallo-Roman castle at Martres the 16th and 17th centuries, but also those of Soulase 19th century and Thebe , and the fountain of Saint Vidian.
