TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Municipalities of the Mediterranean coast, Mandelieu-La Napoule is located at the southwest corner of the Alpes-Maritimes. At the foot of the Esterel and Tanneron, it opens onto the Gulf of La Napoule. Covering an area of 3 137 hectares, the municipality is bordered by the town of Cannes, by the common Pégomas and Roquette-sur-Siagne by the common Théoule-sur-Mer, by common Tanneron of Frejus and St Raphael in the Department of Var, by the Mediterranean Sea.
  • His name was originally Mandeluec. The Romans transformed it into Mantolvocus, Mandolocus or Manduolocus. In the Middle Ages, the province took its current name: Mandelieu. Never over time, it has lost its meaning. Simple meaning: Mandelieu was a place of command, that is to say, a place where command is the leader. Mandeluec was the heart of a vast area ranging from Arlucea (St. Cassian) through Epulia (La Napoule) and Theol (Théoule) to lose in the Esterel. It also included Avignonet which was subsequently built a castle and a ruined village Turenne in the year 1387. Epulia (La Napoule) had only a few fishermen's houses. After the destruction Avignonet, Villeneuve family who owned, built to Epulia a new castle and Epulia took the name of La Napoule. Residents Avignonet followed their lords and thus was formed the village. Theol (Théoule) in ancient times was appreciated for a port facility that ships were to obtain water directly from the source rocks flowing into the sea terms, hamlet of recent construction, has become chief town since the construction of the City Council in 1929. It owes its name to the terminals which, at this point, demarcating the jurisdiction of the chapter of Grasse, the abbey of Lerins and the bishopric of Frejus.
  • The development of Mandelieu-La Napoule in the early 19th century:
  • While the villas "Belle Epoque" already graced the shores of the Cote d'Azur, Mandelieu long kept intact the beauty of its landscape as people kept customs and ancestral customs.
  • Traditional cultures did not fail: the vines, hay, wheat ... The mandolociens raised cattle and silkworms that fed their beautiful mulberry, olive oil produced excellent and herbs and other "in bunches" (mint, geranium, rose, violet, tuberose, jasmine) were an extra significant. But in 1880, an invasion of Keïroun (small fly that attacks the trees) then followed by a significant foreign competition ended the cultivation of olive trees and silkworms.
  • Then came the international aristocracy who paid close attention to Mandelieu-La Napoule and there he built the Golf Club (1891), the Polo Field Race (1885) and the airfield of Saint Cassian and put the 1st stone Port La Napoule. The Hermitage of Saint Cassian (who has now given way to the airport) were the place of celebrations and parties shooting at pigeons, Feast of Saint Cassian, Casino, Fair cattle ... The wintering discovered the seaside in La Napoule. Through their influence, a new era is dawning for the people of Mandelieu since 1893, La Napoule finally had a station, "the halt of La Napoule" which facilitated the shipment of local products (tiles, corks, pipes, wood, wine, flowers?).
  • In 1900, the 4 districts (Capitou, The Terms, and La Napoule Théoule) combined has 1,150 inhabitants. The factory plugs Mr Nicolas had over 300 workers. La Napoule (200 inhabitants) had two hotels, 2 stores, 2 bakeries, 1 butcher, 5 coffees and 1 tobacconist. The head of ETS Course daily attracted hundreds of foreigners during the winter season. The tramway, Cannes Mandelieu soon to facilitate the movements of wintering birds and at the same time, population.
  • From 1900 to 1914, exploitation of mimosa commercial purposes began and took birth as a new profession, that of mimosas. In 1913, on the banks of the halt of La Napoule, there are hundreds of baskets loaded with mimosa and which were shipped daily.
  • The People:
  • The Grand Duke Michael of Russia (1861-1929): Uncle of Tsar Nicolas II, and brother of Alexander III, he was forced into exile for having married the Countess Sophie de Torby, granddaughter of the poet Pushkin, who was a lower rank. The relaxing pinewood Mandelieu-La Napoule, situated on the seafront seduced him and he reinvented in 1891, the Scottish golf in St Andrews. Thus was born the? Old Course 'first golf Côte d'Azur. On the fairways now more than a century, he received all the European aristocracy, not only for the joys of "small ball", but also to share a good meal, tea or 5 hours walking. Thus, around the Grand Duke is also frequently met the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Prince and Princess of Saxe-Coburg, Prince Ourousoff, General Vicomte de Bernis, the Prince and Princess Thurn and Taxis and many other crowned heads as his Royal Highness Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later Edward 7th which complimented the course: "No one else could compete with him in point of beauty, the site of the picturesque and comfortable. In 1922 he received with great pomp Lloyd George, Prime Minister of Great Britain and Aristide Briand, President of the Council of France who faced each other peacefully and sports before attending the peace conference that would lead to the settlement of litigation War and the League of Nations. An accident almost have serious consequence? the carriage where the Grand Duke and his family had taken place was hit by "one of those new motor vehicles" on the bridge of St. Cassian and he was thrown from his car. For over 20 years, the municipality demanded the rectification of the said narrow humpbacked bridge, studies were being conducted as quickly! Access to Mandelieu the first car it was much improved. On 1 May 1909, the Grand Duke Michael of Russia has laid the foundation stone of the new port and in 1910 the tram line linking Cannes Mandelieu (and stopping at the racetrack) is inaugurated. Through its influential interventions, the Grand Duke Michael also helped stop (PLM railway line linking Paris and Lyon Marseille) at the station of La Napoule (1911).
  • César Ritz (1850-1918): The king of chefs? the chef of kings. Farmer's poor Swiss Valais, he entered the hotel as many of his countrymen. On the Riviera he met Auguste Escoffier and their respective engineering revolutionize French gastronomy. This prestigious leader will become the owner of the famous chain of hotels bearing his name. On March 17, 1892, a culinary homage which he will head will be given the prestigious Golf Club to celebrate "the zeal, energy and perseverance of Michael of Russia". Here is the menu gargantuan "Belle Epoque" of the banquet: Venetian soup, salmon trout Hollandaise sauce, Apples in English, Saddle pre-salted Portuguese, Salmi of pheasant with old Warm-cold partridges in the frozen asparagus Rich gravy, roasted Bresse capon, lettuce salad, crusts to Knight, Nougatine iced desserts, coffee and liqueur. All washed down as required by Sherry, Chateau Saint-Julien Champagne and Monopoly.
  • Leo Brown (1881-1944): Son of Louis Brown-Flower Pea, horticulturist and botanist of great value, he followed the footsteps of his father, "creator of mimosa Good Home" and devoted himself to propagating the selection, the search for new varieties of mimosa.
  • Nicolas Popoff (1878-1929): pioneer of aviation, he hit the headlines Aeronautics March 27, 1910 by making a round trip between Mandelieu and the Islands of Lerins, on a bi-plane "Wright" and then signed a double record because it was on this occasion the first to reach the altitude of 207 meters. This feat made him famous and he became aide to the Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and the Grand Duke Nicolas during the war. His patrons, ruined by the Russian Revolution, he returned to Mandelieu as a starter at the Golf Club. An epic ending sadly by a suicide bathhouse La Bocca and any inheritance: a razor, a badger and a note of 100 francs for cleaning!
  • Louis Paulhan (1883-1963): famous aviator of the war of 1914-1918, he was the 10th pilot to move his patent. He fought 2 world records and was a pioneer in aviation activities in particular by creating a school of flying boats and performing the first aerial photographs. He was one of the first mimosa of Mandelieu.
  • Mimosa: winter sun
  • Since ages, Mandelieu-La Napoule lives to the rhythm of flowering of these multiple suns. Madly in love with those yellow clusters that have arisen in Australia, Mandelieu-La Napoule has quickly noticed the odor and visual impact of these branches on sunny hills. In the middle of last century that the mimosa take root in the Esterel Mountains and the Tanneron. Mobilizes its culture today, a dozen mimosas (Local hundreds around the city).
  • Mimosa, "the winter sun, is so dear to the heart of Mandolociens and Napoulois that the entire city celebrated every year in February, the myriad of small suns that illuminate the hills and intoxicating scent of his senses . This festival of mimosa, rich in tradition and local folklore, together in one dance, mimosa, emerald forests and the deep blue sea.
  • Mimosa, imported from Australia in the region by British botanists in the early 19th century, adapted tremendously well to his new environment. The European aristocrats, seduced by the relaxed lifestyle of this enchanting site, were the first to decorate their gardens (Lord Brougham, Sir Woolfield).
  • Do not merely be a decorative shrub that shines a thousand lights in January and February, it is also exploited for its species. It thus enters into the composition of perfumes famous: Farnesiana of Caron, Byzance by Rochas, Givenchy's Amarige.
  • Instant like all flowers, mimosa is marketing its technology forcing. This process is performed in a closed room maintaining a temperature of 25 ° and a hydrometer 85. It allows the blossoming of the flower and its conservation through the addition of a special powder called "Chrystal." The technique of forcing, described as "biological miracle" by interested parties, has its source in two versions to the origin of his discovery. The first is coming home from school, a girl picked a bunch of mimosa, not yet fully hatched, for his mother. She, not wanting to offend her daughter, place the bouquet in a vase and installs it in the laundry. What was his surprise to discover the next bouquet blooming and glowing lights of miles. The second: a gardener Cannes la Bocca had raked all the cut branches of a mimosa and had collected a pile of manure. The next day, with humidity at night and heat the manure, the mimosa was hatched.
  • But the history of Mimosa is lined with pitfalls and the first great disaster arrives February 13, 1929 with frost and snow. Then 2 years later to celebrate the perseverance of producers Mimosa and its rebirth, the 1st Day Mimosa appeared in Mandelieu-La Napoule February 16, 1931. This festival is indeed one of the oldest local traditions that, despite some interruptions due to weather conditions, sometimes forest fires, is revived by the fierce desire of the inhabitants of the town. They divided into various associations of the city are the spearheads of this traditional festival and volunteers decorate the floats during the night before the Grand Corso. The mimosa is definitely part of the history of Mandelieu-La Napoule.
  • Today it is 8 million bouquets are shipped by the mimosas premises worldwide.
