TOWN PRESENTATION

It is a dynamic village of Grand Biterrois, located 15 km north of Béziers, 25 km from the sea, near the foothills of the Montagne Noire and the Cevennes, on the axis 909 Beziers-Bédarieux.

Magalas is an old medieval village where visitors like stroll through its old streets, discovering the remains of the ramparts, its porches, its 11th century church. The richness and length of the site are real tourist attractions.

Many services and equipment value the site as the cultural, sporting, economic and in terms of health and safety. Many companies and associations animate the village and provide a wide range of choice among 2 400 residents and allow them to find moments of relaxation.

Magalas lived primarily on the vine. Its winemakers in recent years, chose the map of Quality and able to improve the wine. But Magalas has to look to the 21st century by diversifying its economy. An area of traditional activities and economic "The bold, well served by the county 909, was launched in 1990, expanded in 2000. Many shops are located. A 3rd Expansion is underway.

Before the rise in the early 11th century on the "Magal" bristling with rocks and brush, the castle and the village that bears the name of Magalas, Montfo another hill is served oppidum of the inhabitants of the first and second age of iron and those of the Gallo-Roman. Many witnesses such qu'aqueduc, sinks, ovens, various sherds attest to that occupation. In the countryside many farms which the height of importance is to develop the 3rd century cereals, vineyards and olive groves on the land such as generous with the name of its former owner "Octavian". But because of the uncertainty brought by the oppressors from the south and east from 950 or so, the city climbs the hill and turns into a real camp. Thus the first written reference to Magalas back to 1060, 65, 89 and 1132 under the name "Castrum Magalatium (cartulary of abbeys and Gellone Aniane).

The village was the seat of a barony dependent viguerie Béziers castrum but appears only in acts of the 12th century as a field of Viscounts of Narbonne. From the medieval period the village retains its "boom" absolute pieces of wall, stalls, a round, two successive city walls surrounding the elliptical platform summit and alleys in "circulades" and a car recently restored and flowers tastefully, vaulted passages and three doors that opened to the cardinal points. The so-called "Pindra" fortified arch, semicircular is topped with a bow battlements. His style is the military architecture of the 13th and 15th century ... The most important is, however, is the oldest, access to the south it is called the Lord of Magalas: Lawrence. The village at that time three hundred souls. The castle chapel received the same pattern as in 1270 and became a parish church. Beautiful proportions, Romance, rebuilt in the 14th and 15th century it was in 1974 the subject of major restoration that gave it a new luster. Its north portal surmounted by a low arch forming porch is listed as historic monuments. When the people of Magalas marked a stronger devotion to Holy Cross and took the largest extension to the pilgrimage chapel of scrubland, Saint Laurent which is solemnly celebrated the Feast August 10 was abandoned and May 3 was the civil and religious festival with market, feasting and games honoring the Holy Cross.

In the current state of knowledge little information we are able to more recent periods, but by official decision procedure before Mr. Gabriel Bar, the magistrate in the presidial senechaussee Beziers there was November 5, 1649 in the sacristy of the church "bru slement" wide securities, papers, records, civil and religious ornaments and silverware?

When, in 1789 Magalas became chief town of Canton, encompassing within its jurisdiction the various villages in north-west, he is proud of its 900 inhabitants.

The 19th century saw the creation of the district of the city and the opening of the Avenue of the station from crossing the tracks and construction of the station.

Many winegrowers' houses shelter families of wine. At the end of the century, the town hall and schools Captain Bonnet along a promenade shaded by plane trees, since popular with strollers and bowls players. A bandstand attracted musicians until the 1920s.

Despite the victims of too many wars 14/18, 39/45 and Algeria whose memory is honored on the memorial erected by Anjalbert, the village continued to grow in the 19th century. Note, the boys' school became the College, recently restored, the cooperative winery opened in 1936, the sports hall with a playground in 1992 and many developments carefully distributed around the nucleus. These are occupied by residents increasing numbers, attracted by the quality of services, proximity to urban areas and various activities, proposed by the associations, the MPT and sports clubs, such as Carnival Day May 3 The feast of local specialties, meet the lace, tournaments and summer balls.
