Les Anses-d'Arlet (handles only being plural) received their name from a former head named Caribbean Arlet, who owned the entire region for a long time, especially the land leading to the two handles: the great at the entrance to the bay of Fort- de-France, the small, further south, which is accessed by the Diamond. It is among them lies the village.
The tour of Arlet ...
At the beginning of colonization, Caribbean brothers, Arlet and Driver, have abandoned their property and land for settlers in the north of Martinique, to take refuge in the South, following a treaty signed between them. Therefore, Arlet settled in the region to which it gave its name.
Again, Arlet abandoned his land to the French to retreat even further south and the Jesuits settled there in 1665. They did not stay long and left their place to the Capuchins. This region of the island was peopled gradually, people took care of the chapels for the use of missionaries.
The first chapel was dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua, a baptism was celebrated in 1671 by Father Simon. In 1673 the chapel was replaced by a church. Major repairs were undertaken in 1687 by the financial care of "parishioners" as offerings. This church was destroyed during the years 1762 and 1763 by the English who burned everything. It took several years for the population was able to rebuild homes and care for religious buildings. The church was rebuilding with the help of Henri Larcher, wealthy local resident. In recognition for his benefactor, she was placed under the patronage of Saint-Henri.
Until 1676, there was no established church in this part of the island, church services were made by visiting priests (Jesuits / Capuchin / Dominicans). It is from this date one of them was charged with Handles-d'Arlet and Diamond.
Eight years later, the two towns were built in separate parishes but continued for many years to have a common serving who resided in the handles. Under a decree published on 12 June 1837, the Governor of the moment, Mackau, with the approval of the board, divided into twenty common in Martinique. Thus was founded the town which included Les Anses-d'Arlet South (where the mayor lived), The Diamond and Sainte-Luce. It was administered by a mayor, three deputies and nine board members. Sainte-Luce was detached in 1848 and The Diamond in 1862.
