TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Its location:
  • In the heart of Regional Natural Park of the Northern Vosges, Lembach is located in the valley of the Sauer, in a basin at the confluence of Sauer and Heimbach. The village is surrounded by hills whose altitude reaches 450 to 500 m (Riegeisberg northeast, west Kraehberg, Hochwald east).
  • Lembach is about 15 km from Wissembourg, 25 km from Haguenau and 6 km from the German border.
  • This town has the distinction of having a vast territory and rich in history with castles (the most famous Fleckenstein), the Maginot Line (book of the lime kiln), the tile, its mills, and laundries .
  • History:
  • If the Gallo-Roman remains bear witness to an ancient occupation site Lembach, the first written mention of the village date from 754.
  • In the Middle Ages, Lembach knows a very complex administrative situation. Sauer serves as the border between two territories with different statuses: the right bank of the Flecken, a fief granted by a lord to a vassal, and on the left bank of the village (Dorf), a set of land free of any obligation . Moreover, at that time Lembach has two mills on the Sauer: one located on the right bank (of the High Mill, current mill) and the other located on the left bank (Moulin Bas).
  • Several gentlemen have succeeded as owners of the fee (right bank): the Ettendorf (13th century), Bishop of Strasbourg (from 1399 to 1409), the Fleckenstein (from 1409 to 1720) who also acquired the Village (left bank) and von Vitztum Egersberg (from 1721 until the French Revolution).
  • History of Lembach was marked by a succession of periods of prosperity and decline. In 1899 opened a small line of railway which links to Lembach Walbourg, and the great line-Wissembourg Strasbourg. This line marks the beginning of tourism in the upper valley of the Sauer. The line is operated by the network Alsace-Lorraine. It is removed and dismantled at the end of World War II.
  • Between 1930 and 1935, the construction of the work of the Maginot Line, the lime kiln, is the last great period of economic prosperity. In 1939, when the declaration of World War II, residents were evacuated Lembach in Haute-Vienne. At the end of the war, the village is freed twice: first time December 14, 1944, and again March 19, 1945.
  • From the 1970s, residents are close to the shops one after another, victims of the mass distribution located in nearby towns. The village is now practically working Lembach can not contain the departure of young people, and undergoes extensive aging.
  • On 1 September 1972, the town merged with the village Mattstall becoming common associate.
  • In 1993, the town of Lembach is one of the founding members of the Community of Municipalities of the Valley of Sauer, who became the Community of Communes-Pechelbronn Sauer in 2008.
