The name comes from the Breton Faouët "faou" meaning "beech". These trees are also still very numerous. The city owes its origin to a castle no longer exists. Geoffroy's Faouët, contemporary of St. Louis, allegedly participated in the First Crusade in 1095.
Anne of Britain raised the lordship of Faouët, then belonging to the family Boutteville the rank of barony in 1495. The Boutteville were great builders to whom we owe, including the Chapel of St Barbara and that of St. Fiacre, which houses a beautiful gallery. Families and Goulaine Fresnay succeeded them.
In the 18th century, was badly shaken by Le Faouët the escapades of Mary Tromel, better known under the name Marion Faouët. This famous band leader sacked the entire region with the help of his brigands for about fifteen years before being arrested and hanged.
By the mid 19th century is the presence quieter artists, who characterized the town. In the early 20th century, they are more likely to stay or settle in Faouët they immortalized the rich heritage, among which, the old halls of 1542, home to the market twice a month.
