Le Château-d'Oléron, historic capital of the island, is famous for decades as one of the metropolises of the oyster to the Marennes-Oléron. Located at the entrance of the island facing the mainland and oyster beds, Le Château-d'Oléron, canton, has preserved its maritime, while opening up to tourism. The citadel and the ramparts surrounding the town are evidence of a history rich in events.
