Among the major crops of the plateau Cambrai and the beginning of the Avesnois groves, the town of Le Cateau was developed in the valley of the Selle River picturesque 45 kilometers.
Located on a major road (National Route 43), Le Cateau-Cambrésis is the 3rd largest city of Cambrai of its population (7460 inhabitants in the last census) and is the capital of a canton of 18 municipalities (17,486 inhabitants) forming the Cates.
Le Cateau is twinned with the cities of Wiesbeke (Belgium), Westerburg (Germany) and Cave (Italy).
Small industrial and commercial city, Le Cateau-Cambrésis is located 30 km from major highways (A3, A23, A26). It is in direct contact with the road network and motorway French and European. The city is 1 hour from Lille, 2 hours from Paris and 1h30 from Bruges and Brussels. The railway station is located on Main Paris - Brussels and Paris - Cologne.
Le Cateau owes its origin to the meeting, around the year one thousand, two villages Vendelgies and Peronne. In 1001, the Bishop of Cambrai, which had built the first wooden fortress, receives the Holy Roman Emperor Otto 3rd a charter confirming its privileges. The city developed under the authority of the bishops of Cambrai, which were often difficult to enforce their neutrality. It was destroyed several times during the Middle Ages and during the 16th and 17th centuries (rivalry between France and Spain).
It is famous by the treaties signed in 1559, which ended the wars of Italy and trying to establish a new European order.
By the Treaty of Nijmegen in 1678 (under Louis XIV), the city is linked to France, but retain the privileges (including tax) until the Revolution.
Becoming the 19th century a thriving industrial town (textiles and metallurgy), it has suffered greatly during the 1st World War when the British army was illustrated at the Battle of Le Cateau (August 26, 1914) and during the liberation ( October 1918).

The city has four monuments:
The Town Hall (built in the mid-16th century) and its belfry (built in 1705 under the episcopate of Fenelon).
The Church of St. Martin (former Benedictine abbey) built from 1634. An architectural jewel of baroque art (way), it is also notable for the exuberance of sculpture Jaspard Marsy.
The Palace Fenelon former second home of archbishops of Cambrai, lords of Le Cateau. The present building, yard and garden, dates from the late 17th century and since 1982 houses the Matisse Museum.
The historic brewery Abbey (Lefebvre-old brewery Scalabrino), historical monument under the industrial heritage, it was renovated two years ago and is home to The Brewery History of the Abbey which produces beer "The Vivat" .

The Chapel of the Good God, a remnant of Notre Dame (now extinct).
The remains of walls, destroyed in the early 17th century, part of which has been rebuilt.
The former Jesuit College, whose buildings and porch are built into the current school Camille Desmoulins.
The window "Bees" Matisse offered by the painter in 1954 for the nursery that bears his name.
The window "Joy" and the mosaic "Orpheus" by Auguste Herbin offered in 1957 to decorate the school group that bears his name. The window rebuilt exactly in the Matisse renovated appears in all its splendor.
The subterranean network of caves and boves exists in the city center where neighborly architecture of brick and white stone. Witnesses in the history of the city, they can now be visited (groups by reservation).
A market is held every Tuesday and Friday morning.
The local fair is held annually the weekend closest to September 22. On this occasion various events take place including a traditional procession, a carnival, fair trade and a cattle market.
For several years running the Festival Cacoule (specialty of the city), the second weekend of October with fair gastonomique, local produce, crafts fair and the old, 2 days of entertainment.
