The town takes its name from the Latin Fagus meaning "beech". This kind of name is quite old, it usually goes back to earlier periods in the 11th century (when the major clearing). The article "the" above was added later. The Dark is the name of the creek that runs through the town. As the communes of Lapleau and Marcillac-la-Croisille, there are still many vestiges of the "Transcorrézien" train of freight and passengers connecting Tulle and Ussel and halted at the station now beautifully restored.
