La Romieu is a small town located north of the Gers, in Gascony.
"Romieu" comes from the Gascon Roumieu word meaning "Pilgrim of Rome". For it is in 1082, returning from a pilgrimage to Rome, that two German monks decided to stop and create a sauveté in these places. In the 14th century, the village grew in importance when Arnaud d'Aux Lescout (chamberlain and chamberlain of Pope Clement V) built in his village a beautiful college. The Collegiate Church of St. Peter La Romieu (cloisters, towers) is now listed monument and World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Sumptuous cloister, its single nave church, and its two towers are now a jewel in the industry heritage Gers. One of the two towers contains also an architectural treasure: a double staircase probably built to facilitate the escape in case of invasion. It is open to visitors all year round.
In the town, you can also find a great private botanical park open to visitors, the gardens of Coursiana. This park has four gardens: an arboretum of 700 species, an English garden, a garden of medicinal plants, aromatics and spices and a vegetable garden. This park is located 600 m from the college.
Finally, the commune has numerous signposted circular routes for hikers and mountain bikers.
