On the Napoleon Road, in the heart of Matheysin plateau 900 meters above sea level and surrounded by the summits of the Vercors and the Ecrins, the city of La Mure is the largest municipality in the south of the Isere. It has its gastronomic specialties with murçon, a cooking sausage flavored with caraway (wild fennel), the ravioli matheysines which are lined with potatoes, herbs and onions, and topped the pie Muroise pork and veal marinated with herbs, olives and mushrooms. These products are local to find in shops and every Monday morning on market stalls La Mure the heart of the old town.
SIGHTSEEING
Several buildings are to be seen in downtown La Mure: the imposing City Hall, built 120 years ago, the belfry, the old hall, the house that houses the museum Caral Matheysin. It has many rooms devoted to the history and traditional activities of the Dauphiné. The museum also has a room dedicated to famous contemporary music composer, Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992), who spent part of his life on the set Matheysin where nature was for him a powerful source of inspiration. As of May 15, 2012, the museum Matheysin opens a new wing for contemporary art-friendly spaces with works of artist Claude Garanjoud (1926-2005). Following a large donation from his widow in the town of La Mure, some 385 works, some twenty paintings depicting 50 years of work of this painter of Muroise are on permanent display to the public: the meticulous figurative drawings to very large format abstract.
La Mure is also the city of Saint Peter Julian Eymard (1811-1868). This man was born at 69 Rue du Breuil was ordained priest in the diocese of Grenoble. He founded two congregations including still radiate throughout the world. Eminent apostle of the Eucharist, Peter Julian Eymard was canonized in 1962 by Pope John XXIII. For the bicentennial of his birth, February 4, 2011, the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament to La Mure inaugurated, on the ground floor of the house where the saint, the museum of Father Eymard.
