La Gresle is located on the top Beaujolais Mountains, west of Lyon and north of Saint-Etienne. In 2005, La Gresle had 815 inhabitants. Altitude 530 m.
The village was situated on the territory of the Gallic tribe of Aedui, from 882 we find the trace of the church, "agroledas" dedicated to the Blessed Virgin in the 9th century a Adalgard, lord of the place, gives the church chapter of St. Vincent de Macon. Then she falls into the hands of secular lords: the 11th century it was given to the Bishop of Macon Landry. In 1603 the region was ravaged by 300 warriors and 620 horses under the direction of the Marquis de Chevriers. He fled and joined the army of the princes at Koblenz.
The inhabitants of La Gresle live for several centuries of farming and weaving, this dual activity enabled them to survive. In the census of 1876 the Gresle is at its peak with 2660 inhabitants. But the exodus begins Roanne, workers follow the weaving factories that locate in the Faubourg Mulsant, in 1975 there are only 652 inhabitants, since 1982 a new trend is emerging with a continuous repopulation of rural areas.
SIGHTSEEING
The site of Our Lady dominates the village. Housed in area picnic plaza and alley, it offers breathtaking views of the Mountains Forez and Madeleine and all the surrounding villages (thirty weather permitting). Under the snow, the show is magical. The site is visited by deer and squirrels and a few amateur painters.
The whole town (and trails) is marked with care, can not be lost, a trail map is available in town hall. This is an opportunity to get closer to the town pond (Trazette, Moulin, the Tournelle and The Castle) and the peasant heritage such as washing, wells, stone walls, Cross Road.
