Situated near the forest of Hermitain, La Couarde is a small town very pleasant, situated between Saint-Maixent-l'Ecole, La Mothe-Saint-Héray and Melle.

The town has existed since 1793 and the village of Goux has been attached in 1890.

The inhabitants of La Couarde are called "Cowards".

La Couarde Temple: Built in the early 20th century, the temple houses a part of La Couarde Protestantism Museum Poitevin including the history of the period known as the "desert" where they held secret meetings. A genealogy center has also found a place.
