TOWN PRESENTATION

La Chapelle-Hugon is a small village of Cher located 40 km from Bourges and 20 km from Nevers.

His history of yesterday and today:

La Chapelle-Hugon is a very old town. Since 1083 a royal charter mentions Capella Hugonis hence the current name of the people Capelo-Hugon (es). Hugon is the name of a monk?

While crossing the channel from Berry 1841et the line jalopy from 1850 to 1950, the village at least in its present area has never experienced a boom industry. The only remaining vestige of the activity forges Trézy that worked since the Middle Ages along the Aube. This site was essentially a laboratory. Here Dufaud engineer who was also Mayor of La Chapelle-Hugon and his team developed in 1817 the first iron rolled into France. This great technological advance not benefit La Chapelle-Hugon, industrialization was carried out on sites and TORTERON Fourchambault challenging the closure of the ironworks Trézy.

Why the concept of present size? In 1863, the town of Grossouvre was created by distraction of common Vereaux, and La Chapelle-Hugon Sancoins. La Chapelle-Hugon underwent amputation of more than 600 ha (brick, village, castle ...) losing considerable economic advantages.

Second empire between the two world wars, taking advantage of the proximity of the forest, loggers and charcoal burners developed an important activity. At the initiative of Jules Bonnet was created the first national federation of loggers. She sat in the hamlet of Walnut Boisseau. In response, forest owners gathered at the Chateau des Bordes.

After 1945, the modernization of society has severely affected the village with a population substantially halved, closing shops and classes.

For three decades the trend has reversed as evidenced by the last census: 305 residents in 1975, 376 inhabitants in 1999. The school has regained its vitality, services have become available: hall, library, circuit hikes, postal agency, multi trade services ....

Today La Chapelle-Hugon resources are mainly livestock (cattle, sheep) and polyculture.

Local Festival always the first weekend after July 14: Petanque competition, fireworks, dancing outdoors on Saturday. The Sunday flea market, exhibition of old tractors and old cars.
