The Common Bachellerie lies at the crossroads of the RN89 (Bordeaux / Lyon) and D704 (Limoges / Sarlat) almost equidistant from Brive and Perigueux. It is since 2004 one of the gateways to the Perigord Black Country on the A89 motorway as it hosts the freeway interchange called Thenon.

The name appears Bachellerie in 1466 after the Hundred Years War and is probably from a personal name (Bachelor). This village on the shores of Cern, the intersection of two Roman roads between Limoges and Bordeaux to Cahors in Lyon, was burned during the Hundred Years War and then rebuilt on higher ground.
