TOWN PRESENTATION

As part of the upper valley of the Marne, Joinville and its surroundings offer many scenic spots that make your stay more pleasant visitors, whether amateur old stones, history, trout fishing and walking in forest. The Vallage is really a separate territory. There floats a sort of magic that comes from its vast forests, its picturesque villages, its castles, abbeys and forgotten in a valley fold.

Home to the Men from the highest-Antiquity, Vallage made the prosperity of all the great men who lived there. The Gallo-Romans who developed economy in our days, through the Middle Ages, who live lives of many monasteries and fortresses. But it's the 16th century that lived Vallage its Golden Age, by attending the birth of the strain of the Guises who will shake the Kings of France.

Because of its natural resources, Vallage was the cradle of metallurgical water for motive power, forests for charcoal and especially iron ore. Therefore melting Art Haute-Marne is unrivaled in the world in terms of know-how and is still thriving here smelters at the forefront of technology.


SIGHTSEEING
  • The castle of the Great Garden with its splendid Renaissance garden.
  • City Tour: Enjoy the time of the Renaissance as you stroll on the pier Peceaux along the "Little Venice", the Mail dock or on the deck of Poncelot the 16th century. Be amazed by the maze of narrow alleys of the Old Town and its medieval houses nestled against the hill of the old feudal castle, which was once the home of the Princes of Joinville.
  • The Church of Our Lady (twelfth century) is full of jewels and works of art unique. A remarkable alabaster tomb (sixteenth century), the belt relic of St. Joseph of the Crusade brought by St. Louis or the Organ Louis Le Bé invoice typical French (seventeenth century) in its original box (tribune of the 16th century) are available for your contemplation.
  • The Chapel of St. Anne (1504) flamboyant style features remarkable stained glass (16th century Troyes school) illustrating the life of St. Anne and the Virgin. Near the chapel is also the tomb of Sir John and Princes of Joinville, faithful companion of the king.
  • The audience is the former seigneurial court that was created in 1561 by Antoinette de Bourbon. This is one of the few survivors in France. You will discover in many reconstructions (80 costumed mannequins size). You will meet the good king St. Louis, relive the funeral of Claude de Lorraine, 1st Duke of Guise and also the visit to Joinville of Louis XIII, with the Musketeers and Cardinal Richelieu. Before leaving, let yourself be trapped in the dungeons of the Principality of Joinville.
  • The Apothecary: Former Hospital Pharmacy Joinville built in 1567, it becomes now a museum containing over 230 pots and utensils used in this establishment in the 18th and 19th centuries. Come discover the cures of witches of old.
  • For every guided tour, learn about the departure times from the Tourist Office on +33 3 25 94 17 90.
  • Summer: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday to visit from the audience and 14h to 15h30 of the apothecary (go to the Tourist Office). On Wednesday, city tour to 14h and 15h30, visit the Chapel of St. Anne.
  • Permanence to the audience as well: In July and August visits from 15h to 17h, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The rest of the year from May to October, visits from 15h to 17h, Sundays only.

EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS

  • A 25 km, Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises, a famous town of General de Gaulle, will charm you with a visit to a part of the house of the General, but especially thanks to its magnificent museum that traces the history of 20th century, when de Gaulle was a great influence.   • A 25 km from Joinville, you'll find naturally the Lac du Der, the largest artificial lake in Europe and its bird sanctuary, harbor, beaches, restaurants and natural surroundings and wildlife.
  • A 20 km, you will discover the Castle of Voltaire, Cirey-sur-Blaise, where you will visit on site the exposure of a painter and sculptor in a former priory, where was built a Zen garden.
