Town Presentation

  • The city of Jallais has 3 266 inhabitants. The total area is 52.81 kilometers square, it is therefore the 2nd Joint Borough after Cholet. This town is located north west of France, south west of Anjou and the heart of Mauges. It lies 17 km north of Cholet, 48 km south west of Angers and 58 km east of Nantes.
  • History:
  • Towards the end of the 10th century, is in a charter of the word Jalesiens, Jalesiacus, then Jalesia Jales the 11th century: Jalesuim, Galiscus, Jaleis the 12th century; Jalleti Galeis then in the 13th century, 14th century and 15th century, 1520, according to an inscription on a chalice, the name of Jallay in 1545, somewhat later, Jalais. It was not until the 19th century to read Jallais.
  • The pleuplades lived on the territory of Jallais before the era of the Middle Ages. Thus do we find objects of antiquity, a Celtic stone ax and another copper were collected at the foot of the tower Bouère. Also small menhirs, many cut and polished stones were discovered at various places in the municipality. Roman roads have been upgraded, from the time of Julius Caesar was one of Chalonnes and crossing the territory from north to south of the Burgenière Lande Durant. This road was known as "Grand Chemin du Poitou" in the 18th century. The coming towards Nantes detached, the Ogeard Noue, a branch line to St. Peter's Chemillé. Coins, medals, pins were found there for many years, they dated from the Roman emperors.
  • The first castle identified on the territory of Jallais was at a place called La Salle Jallais at the edge of town. He belonged to the lords of Montmorillon. When this branch of the family left Jallais to 1290, the castle was razed. They immediately reconstructed the first Brinière the manor, the nearby town and Notre Dame.
  • With Nerra Fulk, Count of Anjou, Jallais asserted itself as an important center of religious organization from the 11th century, this county became the Deanery of Mauges who had 42 municipalities.
  • As elsewhere in France, Jallais will experience episodes of bloody religious war in the 16th century. Thus in 1568 the Huguenots (or Protestant) attack the religious center, is across the desolate farms, houses, castles, churches, rectories are burned. The first Protestant invasion is repelled by the faithful of the Roman church. In 1574, the Huguenots reappear everything is burned, looted and smashed. The country continues to thank you people of war for over twenty years.
  • During the two centuries that separate the religious wars of the Revolution, the peaceful reign. It allows the development of industry and commerce: weaving, laundry, logging (making clogs), ten watermills relayed in case of low water by windmills Montata and Vernon, two tile to cabournes some tanneries.
  • The plight between 1780-1790: crop failures, food shortages, famines ... the outbreak of the Revolution of 1789, were all factors in favor of a peasant revolt in the world attached to royalty and refuses the first republic. In February 1793, the Convention decreed a levy en masse to defend the borders against the invading Austrians, is the spark that puts the "sparks to fly."
  • Jacques Cathelineau, a native of Pine in Mauges raises farmers Mauges cons of the Republican government. Thus in March 1793, ie at the beginning of the Vendée insurrection, peasants in the Pine Mauges and La Poitevinière, under the command of Cathelineau, attack the castle where Jallais line soldiers and National Guard are garrisons. This was quickly controlled by farmers. They seized the gun "The Missionary". Restless Cathelineau attack Chemillé and Cholet. Master of the situation in Mauges Cathelineau was appointed general of the armies Vendée. He decides to take the capital of Brittany Nantes, but during the fighting, the legendary hero of the first days of Military Vendee is hit in the chest and died three days later in his retirement on Ancenis.
  • During the three years of the wars of Vendée is terror in the Bocage. In 1794, Jallais knows the desolation in the transition of command of infernal columns Desmares and friar, the town was burned.
  • In 1832 the Duchesse de Berry, to defend the succession of the throne to his son Henry, embarks on an adventure and triggered a new in the Vendee uprising. But the Vendee not find the momentum of 1793. Thus, May 27, 1832, gentlemen of Civrac, Morisset and Cathelineau (son of General Vendeen) are prosecuted as agents of the Duchesse de Berry by a detachment of the 29th row. Refugee Chaperonnière The Castle, the son of Cathelineau was killed by a gunshot.
  • Since that time, Jallais like the rest of the Vendee History lives peacefully.
  • By a decree dated September 27, 1871, the north-east of the Commune (the country Cabournes) was established as a parish under the title of Our Lady of Mauges, the church of Our Lady of Mauges is built completed in 1868, Notre Dame Jallais was built between 1861-1865.

The site is named after the powerful family of Cap who owned the land until the late 15th century. Having seen many owners, the castle was the venue for one of the last episodes of the Vendée insurrection. In 1832, Generalissimo Cathelineau there was in fact shot by a police lieutenant, while preparing an insurrection.
