TOWN PRESENTATION
  • The town of 3266 inhabitants Jallais account. Its area is 52.81 km ², it is, therefore, the second municipality of the district after Cholet. This city is located in the northwest of France, southwest of Anjou and in the heart of Mauges. It is located 17 km north of Cholet, 48 km southwest of Angers and 58 km east of Nantes.
  • History:
  • In the late 10th century, is in a charter of the term Jalesiens, Jalesiacus, Jales Jalesia then in the 11th century: Jalesuim, Galiscus, Jaleis the 12th century and Jallet Galeis the 13th century, 14th century and 15th century, 1520, according to an inscription on a chalice, the name of Jallay in 1545, a little later Jalais. Not until the 19th century to read Jallais.
  • From pleuplades lived in the territory of Jallais prior to the time of the Middle Ages. So do we have found objects from the earliest times, a Celtic stone ax and another copper were collected at the foot of the tower of Bouère. Also small standing stones, many stones cut or polished were discovered in various parts of the municipality. Roman roads have been updated, from the time of Julius Caesar: one had Chalonnes and crossed the territory from north to south, the Lande Burgenière to Durant. This road was known as "Grand Chemin du Poitou" in the 18th century. One that was heading for Nantes detached at the Ogeard Noue, a branch to St. Peter Chemillé. Coins, medals, pins were found there for many years, they dated from the Roman emperors.
  • The first castle on the territory of identified Jallais was at a place called La Salle Jallais at the end of the village. He belonged to the lords of Montmorillon. When this branch of the family left Jallais to 1290, the castle was razed. As soon as we reconstruct the first Brinière mansion, next to the village and the church of Notre Dame.
  • Thanks to Fulk Nerra, Count of Anjou, Jallais himself as an important center of religious organization from the 11th century, this town became the Dean of Mauges which included 42 municipalities.
  • As elsewhere in France, Jallais will experience episodes of bloody religious wars of the 16th century. Thus in 1568 the Huguenots (or Protestant) attack the religious center, it's all the desolation, farms, houses, castles, churches, presbyteries are burned. The first Protestant invasion is repelled by the faithful of the Roman church. In 1574, the Huguenots reappear everything is burned, looted and ransacked. The country remains to thank you people of war for over twenty years.
  • During the two centuries that separate the religious wars of the Revolution, a calm. It allows the development of industry and commerce: weaving, laundry, logging (making clogs), ten water mills in the event of low water relayed by windmills Montat and Vernon, two tile to cabournes some tanneries.
  • The difficult situation between 1780-1790 crop failures, food shortages, famines ... the outbreak of the Revolution of 1789, were all factors in favor of a revolt of the peasantry tied to royalty and refuses the First Republic. In February 1793, the Convention decreed a levy en masse to defend the borders against the invading Austrians, is the spark that sets the 'fire to the powder. "
  • Jacques Cathelineau, a native of Pin Mauges, raises the farmers Mauges against the republican government. So in March 1793, ie at the beginning of the Vendée insurrection, peasants in the Pin and the Mauges Poitevinière, under the command of Cathelineau, attack the castle of Jallais where soldiers of the line and National Guards are garrisons. It is quickly mastered by farmers. They seized the gun "The Missionary". Restless, Cathelineau attack Chemillé and Cholet. Master of the situation in the Mauges, Cathelineau was appointed general of the armies Vendée. He decided to take the capital of Brittany Nantes, but during the fighting, the legendary hero of the first day of the Vendée is hit in the chest and died three days later in his retirement on Ancenis.
  • During the three years of the Wars of Vendée is terror in the Bocage. In 1794, Jallais knows the desolation in the transition of command of infernal columns and Desmares Cordelier, the village was burned.
  • In 1832 the Duchess of Berry, to defend the succession of the throne of his son Henry, embarks on an adventure and trigger a new uprising in the Vendee. But the Vendée not find the momentum of 1793. Thus May 27, 1832, Members of Civrac, Morisset and Cathelineau (son of General Vendéen) continued as agents of the Duchesse de Berry by a detachment of the 29th line. Refugee Chaperonnière The Castle, the son of Cathelineau is shot from a gun.
  • Since then, Jallais like the rest of the Vendée history lives quietly.
  • By a decree of September 27, 1871, the north-eastern part of the Commune (the country of Cabournes) was established as a parish under the title of Our Lady of Mauges, the Church of Our Lady of Mauges is built complete in 1868, Notre Dame was built between 1861-1865 Jallais.

The site is named after the powerful family of Cap who owned the land until the late 15th century. Having seen many owners, the castle was the venue for one of the last episodes of the Vendée insurrection. In 1832, Generalissimo Cathelineau there was in fact shot by a police lieutenant, while preparing an insurrection.
