The village Gueberschwihr is cited as such in the 8th century. Many nobles established their residence in the 11th century. Sign of the rich soil, many religious orders and houses and possessions were to tithe into wine. This wealth attracted the envy and the village was looted several times during wars.
Today Gueberschwihr, medieval picturesque village is a characteristic of the Route des Vins d'Alsace. Nestled into the hillsides in lush greenery, this charming village that has retained its original charm and authenticity invites you to discover its rich heritage: half-timbered houses, carved doorways, remarkable architecture, and flowering vines delight the eyes of the curious . Overlooking the village square, the steeple of the 12th century novel, the jewel of the village, is an essential step for Route Romane d'Alsace.
The town is classified as a "historic site" since October 14, 1970.
The church of St. Pantaleon: it was built in the 12th century. Saint Himera appears as the first patron of the parish. Following the outbreak of plague between 1337 and 1348, St. Pantaleon needed gradually as the patron saint of the church. Formerly located in a walled cemetery, the church of St. Pantaleon suffered only little changes until the late 18th century. The choir, surrounded by two side chapels closed by apses was built over a crypt. A tower, 36 meters high, crowned the cross aisle. In 1835 the church was considered too small. The choir, the chapels, the aisles and the crypt were destroyed and a new church is built. In 1850, cracks appear on the new building is threatened with ruin. The church was rebuilt again between 1874 and 1878. Only the Romanesque bell tower and north transept are preserved. A larger ship was built south side. Behind the church, there remain some arches of the chapel Saint-Michel was an ancient ossuary.
The Convent of St. Mark, located 2 km from the village, it was founded in 676 by Dagobert II. This Benedictine abbey belonged to the bishopric of Strasbourg. Ruined by the invaders, the monastery was rebuilt in the 11th century. Devastated several times during the Middle Ages, it was restored in 1762 by Abbey Ebersmunster. In 1868, a congregation of sisters of charity St. Joseph settles and is still present in the convent.
The Wine Trail: The trail can cross the orchards, forests and vineyards to discover a unique view. It combines explanations of botanical, geological, historical orchards, forests, vineyards, varietals, terroir and technological change.
Night Tourist: late July. Animation with Alsatian folk dancers and traditional music on the village square. Refreshments available on site with pies outbreaks.
Christmas Market Alsace Provence: mid-December.
