TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Its History
  • Granville owes its name to its first occupants after the Vikings: the Grant family. William the Conqueror asked his help in 1066 and, as a reward for his loyalty during the conquest of Britain, gave him land. In 1230, without male issue, the Grant family is united with the Lord of Argouges (from Gratot near Coutances) who, himself, never lived to Granville.

He also dug in full within cliff, a trench seven feet wide and eighteen feet deep with twenty meters to the base so that the upstream reaches the North Sea and Boscq south side. Granville became an island larger than the Mont-Saint-Michel.

  • In 1695, the British bombed the city again: 80 houses were affected and 27 to rebuild. In 1793, during the Vendee attack, there had to protect the door at the foot of the rampart, a hill and a fence. Seeing the door ajar, the Vendee would come when, from the ramparts, women threw themselves on the barrels of cider. The place of the Isthmus was saved.
