Located on the edge of the Chevreuse Valley, the town of Gif enjoys a pleasant living between city and countryside. It is listed since the 12th century. Since the last century, it encompasses the hamlet of Belleville and the new city of Chevry around the castle of Belleville located on the plateau south.
With 230 hectares of woodland and 70 hectares of green space, it boasts a remarkable natural heritage in which to live.
Some famous people have moved to Gif throughout history: Juliette Adam, writer, Fernand Leger, who opened his studio there in 1952 or the Duke of Windsor, located at the Moulin de la Tuilerie.
With scientific research institutions such as the renowned Institute of Chemistry of Natural dependent CNRS, and great schools like Supélec, Institute of Plant Biotechnology, Engineering House, the town of Gif account six hundred companies and an incubator for companies that combine new technologies and scientific innovations.
GIF is also a hundred associations, facilities for children and the elderly, cultural facilities and sporting events year-round living.
Not far from the equestrian center, we see "the big lime", the home of Fernand Leger place where peace talks between the U.S. and Vietnam.
SIGHTSEEING
The station:
Opened August 26, 1867, the station was the only station Gif built between Orsay and Saint-Remy-les-Chevreuse. The other stations were (Courcelles, the Hacquinière).
The railroad allowed until 1914, the transport of vegetables, pavers sandstone quarried nearby and horse manure needed to grow the fungus called Paris.
The role of the Church:
Around the square are paved with old houses. It is the ancient heart of the village.
On the square, head to the corner of Henry Amodru and Rue Neuve, is a pancake that was the gatehouse of the castle of Button, now owned by the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) in 1946.
The church of Saint-Remi, founded in the 8th and 9th century:
The old parts are still visible, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. It was restored in the 15th and 20th century. In 1988, the architect Thierry Marriage restores its original appearance by ridding it of its interior trim and plaster in the restaurant entirely. From the outside, we see the Romanesque and Gothic architectural features. The Romanesque tower dates from the 12th century.
The church is registered since December 21, 1938 on the supplementary inventory of historic monuments.
The Henry Street Amodru:
At the request of the president of the prisoners Gif of the Second World War, this street will be renamed Amodru Henry, died in deportation in 1944 to honor a giffois who gave his life for France.
Along this street to the town hall, there old houses on both sides.
City Hall:
Hermitage Castle dates from the 19th century built by Baron Meneval in 1831. Baron Meneval was the private secretary of Napoleon, he served with enthusiasm. The castle was then bought by the municipality Gif, May 7, 1938, to serve as mayor.
Inside, there is the portrait of Juliette Adam - French woman of letters, founder of "The new show" who kept a salon frequented by writers and politicians of the 3rd Republic.
The Castle Button:
18th century castle, begun by Claude Mérault in 1754. Charles-Louis Debonnaire who inherits finishes in 1771 by adding two wings. The castle was bought in 1946 to Jacques Noetzlin, friend of Frederic Joliot-Curie, the CNRS will undertake to protect the setting of the castle and the park.
Since 1991, the park was named "Bird Sanctuary" in the framework of the League for the Protection of Birds, flora and fauna are strictly protected since 1993. This is an area of 65 hectares.
The laundry of Gibeciaux:
The laundry served Gibeciaux of a drinker.
The old valve to regulate the flow of water date from 1800 to 1805. In 1817, he added a roof and walls of masonry. The laundry was used by some people, until 1965. The tower dates from 1904, it had latrines.
The Rue du Clos:
