The origins most distant Fresnay back to the 6th century where we note the presence of a dozen families on the site "Fraxinidum. This is in the 9th century the history of the city really starts with the construction of the castle in 877 under the leadership of King Charles the Bald. In fact the site seems ideal for the installation of a fortress because it is situated on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Sarthe. Despite this city, known then as the Fresnay-le-Vicomte, will undergo several assaults, those of William the Conqueror and later the English. With the attack of the English during the Hundred Years War, a native of the region will be honored: Ambroise de Lore, a companion of Joan of Arc, who was appointed captain of the city in recognition of his bravery.
Over the following centuries Fresnay is known for his paintings of hemp. This economy will mark the landscape of the city including the area of Bourg Neuf which identifies many houses of weavers. The architecture of its houses is recognizable to the outside staircase which serves, on the floor of one room living, and lower part, slightly buried, the weaving workshop.
Fresnay-le-Vicomte will Fresnay-sur-Sarthe after the Revolution.
