The center of the department of Herault, 60 km from Montpellier and 35 km from Béziers, in the chamber formed by the first layers of mountains Lodévois, stands on a mound of Fontès the graceful village, overlooking the Boyne Valley.

The origins of Fontès, whose etymology is reminiscent of the "Fountain", go back far enough in history: an early site was inhabited by prehistoric man as evidenced by the tools, weapons, jewelry flint and bronze found in various tenements. The town itself had to be founded by the Visigoths to support the garrison of the castle that guarded the road Cabrières invasions. Fontès, capital of Canton, in the context of administrative reform passed by the States General, Fontès became the chief town of Canton in the district of Béziers, 22 January 1790. For a dozen years, Fontès remain the capital of Canton, a decree of 3 Brumaire Year X, removes and attaches it to the Township of Montagnac.

Fontès is this village on the fringes of the Hérault valley, watered by the river "the Boyne" and guarded by its volcano "the Céressou" (207 m).

• Church of Saint-Hippolyte:

• The first stone was laid in 1299 during the reign of Philippe le Bel fourth, and construction completed in 1340.
