TOWN PRESENTATION
  • Brief history of the city Pelaud:
  • The mountain atmosphere and the size of the city Eymoutiers could suggest to the visitor in a hurry he is in a large town. Yet the architecture of the city where many urban functions read a story that is far from trivial.
  • The name "ayen moustiers", the monastery at the foot of the hill, in one word origins to monastic Eymoutiers. The town developed around the cult of the tomb of St. Psalmet from Ireland at the turn of the 7th century. The site is strategic: here on the left bank of the Vienne, the flat side decks overlooking the river and are dominated by a few puys rounding. It is therefore possible to cross the ford and Vienna to fortify the heights.
  • Fief ecclesiastical Eymoutiers has the distinction of having developed concurrently two population centers. In 1428 when residents set up their charter franchise, the agglomeration outcome of the religious foundation takes precedence over the core formed around the castle of the bishop. The city then surrounded by walls.
  • In the 17th century, religious orders and the guild of tanners are influential. The city is prosperous, all social categories are everywhere: Notables, traders, artisans. The teaching is conducted in 1629 for girls and boys in college in 1833. The roads in the 19th century has resulted in a near traffic, fairs and retain their importance. The activity of tanners continued until 1914, with the perseverance of the last tanner. It gives a face to the original houses whose roofs are open timbered. Another feature for a town near the mountain limo, the low-slope roofs are covered with hollow tiles. The plot is thin and dense which does not exclude some beautiful houses of notables.
  • At the end of the 19th century, Eymoutiers enjoying a revival with the arrival of the railroad and regains its place for the mountain market town limousine.
  • During the 20th century, the activities around the wood provide employment. The city turned to tourism by promoting its history, its heritage and personalities including the creation of a contemporary art center dedicated to Paul Rebeyrolle artist of international repute. With its cloth merchant, and artisan associations, Eymoutiers remains a strong and vibrant city in which to live a few hours or for life!
  • Local cuisine:
  • Pelaud, pelaudine, pad Eymoutiers, potato pie, limousine beef, lamb "belou.
  • The Pelaud is a small oven at the old recipe and making specialty Eymoutiers in the name of the city inhabitants. It consists of a paste made of ground almonds and hazelnut biscuit with chocolate icing.
