| TOWN PRESENTATION |
With its 21 hamlets, the common Escamps marks the boundary between the platforms of the Auxerrois and Puisaye.
We are in the field of heavy soils, particularly the sand and clay colored variegated variety that have long been highly sought after for the manufacture of tiles. The village is located in the fertile valley on the right bank of a small stream (of the Ru Baulche) which was run several mills.
The village was part of the immense possessions of the abbey of Saint-Germain at Auxerre. By the mid 12th century it was surrounded by wide moat.
| SIGHTSEEING |
The church is in the 13th century would have been rebuilt in part the curious church which reflects a prosperous era. It bears traces of very different reconstructions and somewhat difficult to characterize in respect to style and period. Several rounds or medallions painted in 1654 adorn the sides of the aisle. They contain religious subjects and two inscriptions. One of them refers to the massacre? In April, six hundred ninety? Tetric St., 23rd bishop of Auxerre.
Just upstream, Avigneau Castle is a beautiful residence with most buildings dating from the Renaissance, but were largely restored in the 17th century, following civil wars. Rows of tall poplars and the nearby forest on the slope of the hill make a lovely setting. Overlooking the whole, the chapel has become a pleasant place for art exhibitions.
