Ercé is considered the historic capital of the "bear-" many of their inhabitants left to earn a living in the U.S. in the early 20th century with their trained animals for shows in public.

The village has several Ercé churches including the famous church of Cominac, well known in the inventories of 1907 on the separation of church and state where some parishioners had put the bears at the church before the arrival of agents who will carry the inventory.

It also has the famous Chapel of St. Peter, dating from the 11th century and making it one of the oldest chapels Ariege.

A specialty is the cousin of the corner, dish-like garbure which is a derivative of cabbage stew meat decorated, and of course crisp.
