Épinac is a very ancient town, formerly called Monestoy, before taking in August 1656, by letters patent of Louis XIV, the name of County Épinac.

In the 19th century that the exploitation of coal and completion of the railway will promote the development of the town.

Industrialization began in fact, in 1754 and 1755, with mining in the valley Ressille and fixation of the glassware.
