The present church building is relatively new as it dates from the 19th century. Indeed, the first parish church was the village of "The Phenomenon" at a place called the "Guge" was called and then St. Mary Salt. This building and several houses in the village were destroyed by fire in the early 18th century. The new site chosen to rebuild the church amounted to a "motte" (current location) and the new village was called successively to St. Mary Church Newfoundland and Labrador Church and finally Vergt New Church from 1862.
