Located at the foot of Revermont, nestled in a valley between two Jura foothills sloping gently toward the plain of Bresse, landlocked in the department of Jura, Cuiseaux is the easternmost city of Saone-et-Loire.
Its origins are very old. There are 2 kilometers north of the prehistoric village of Balme. Its place-name is of Celtic origin. It was not until 1107 that the existence of Cuiseaux be attested by writings. The lords of Cuisel belonged to a powerful family, probably after the count's house of Burgundy.
