The name of the town has a Latin origin, curtis Giboalda the field Goboald.

Courgivaux was the capital of Canton in the 18th century. Its territory extended until Nogentel Castle, which shows an isolated tower along the highway between 4 and Courgivaux Esternay. Nogentel is now attached to Neuvy.
