TOWN PRESENTATION
  • History:
  • Conches, at the eastern end of Country Ouche retains traces of the Gallo-Roman occupation (route de Chartres to Lillebonne trenches in the forest, etc. ...), his arms: "a golden bend Azure three shells of money "fascinate scholars. Are they referring to the shape of the valley, or the abundance of shellfish ponds, or better yet the memory of Conques, Aveyron, visited by one of the first son of Tosny back from Spain?
  • The fact is that Conches enters the story after the Norman Conquest.
  • A. Malahulce, uncle of Rollo, which expires this country a little son will be named Tosny and will be the first Lord of Conches. Roger first to make war in Spain, founded the Abbey of Chatillon-les-Conches and, abandoning his first fortress near the sources of Rouloir, built the present keep. His son Raoul second part in the conquest of England, receives large areas. Raoul III, returning from a pilgrimage in Spain, visit Conques reports a relic of Sainte Foy, who became the patron saint of the church he built.
  • Sometimes supporter of English, now the King of France, the restless Tosny filled the whole 12th century from their bloody battles against their neighbors proud of Breteuil, Beaumont and Evreux (curious episode in the War of the Belles Dames, 1093).
  • But the French monarchy was confirmed and Philip Augustus, after taking the Château Gaillard Andelys, occupies Conches; the Tosny exile in their fields across the Channel. The lordship of Conches failed for some time to Courtenay, cousins of the king. Robert died in the Holy Land, his son is following in Africa and St. Louis died at Mansura. His daughter who married Robert Amicie 2nd Artois, the land of Conches passes this powerful family. Robert, in rebellion against his king, allied to the English, completely burned the Abbey, but was forced to flee to England.
  • Philippe 6th at The County incorporates the Normandy, the Duke, known as John the Good, King of France, offers the city to Charles the Bad, his son. It revolts and Dugueslin, winner of his troops to Cocherel (1364) takes the walled city after a long siege and remained Comte de Conches until his death.
  • Struggles to resume the English invasion to 1417. The British increase the defensive capacity of the castle, under the command of the famous Captal Buch. However, a companion of the Hire, Robert flocked, bailiff seizes Evreux (1440). He was appointed Captain of Conches and the enemy garrison withdrew with arms and baggage.
  • Since 1442, Talbot, famous English warrior, took the fortress, but after the truce, the valiant Robert of flocked, with a powerful artillery, besieged Conches, the English finally conquered, went "on foot, a stick between his hands" (1449). Conches repaired the ruins of this disastrous period, lay beyond its walls.
  • However, the advent of Henry led the fourth movement of the League. The City remains faithful to the King. The League, defeated first, and sacked the city and the Abbey (1590). The castle never rise again of the damage they caused there. From 1552, a college that will flourish until the Revolution, was founded by Jean Le Vavasseur, abbot of Conches.
  • Indifferent to the troubles of the Fronde, after a short ownership by Rene de Longueuil, Marquis Homes, the City, depending on the county of Evreux, became the preserve of La Tour d'Auvergne, Dukes of Bouillon, until the revolution. Entire defensive system was abandoned.
  • The city is growing again, his business flourished, were renamed as Articles of iron Forges du Vieux Conches. The Dukes of Bouillon obtained the concession of floating timber from the forest by Rouloir and Iton to Rouen was built much in the mid 18th century.
  • Then came the revolutionary period. Conches see the complete destruction of the abbey, three of its churches and their art treasures. Two clubs, the Montagnards and the Sans-Culottes divide the population. The Church Sainte Foy became the Temple of Reason. City officials, suspicious of moderation and imprisoned at the Conciergerie, are released to the downfall of Robespierre and through the intervention of a young conchoise, Eulalie Savarre, from a member of the Public Hi, Robert Lindet.
  • Then you save from oblivion the memory of Father Baudard, pastor of Conches, who, despite the offer of several million, resisted the request of Louis-Philippe of transferring to the Royal Chapel of Dreux the admirable stained glass.
  • In 1844, construction of the Paris-Cherbourg railway transformed the economic and social life of the city. A new hospital, hospice opened in 1869 on the site of the abbey. The hospital replaced the Hotel-Dieu, founded by Nicolas Rougueulle in 1479 and beyond the first hospice established in St. Louis. There were even a leper colony in the hamlet of Valeuil.

  • Again, with the progress of mechanization, the Forges du Vieux Conches experiencing an era of prosperity. They produce artistic firebacks and the central spire of the Cathedral of Rouen fate of their workshops.
  • 1914 saw the departure of conchois for the great war. The French territorial staying in town. British troops, then the body create a picturesque Canadian forestry activity. Then came the return of prisoners from Germany ... and life resumed its course.
  • 1939. The mournful tones of the siren, conchois meet again at the call to arms. 1940. This is the painful exodus of Belgian and northern populations. Hunters are Ardennes step, then the French cuirassiers, leaving the hell of Dunkirk, to come and start to reshape Montlhéry and the Loire. Two hundred people Conches only remain occupied without fighting, but not before looting. It is then the restrictions of the occupier: curfew, guard on the railways, construction of a large airfield on the outskirts of the city and air threats arising. September 1943. First bombing victim who did that. 1944. Shelter in the old underground organized. June 12 twelve victims at the dairy Maggi and destroying railroads. August 23 morning after a restless night (200 shells fell on the city, empty of enemies) Conches is issued by Americans arriving from the southeast. The resistance was contributed in the region to facilitate the Allied victory: harassment of German troops, strafing vehicles, helping friends and airmen refractory workers.
